Kailasa temple in Cave 16 is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. It was by far the most magnificent of the temples. It was both carved into the surrounding rock. It was the only cave to feature a standalone temple. It was all carved from solid rock. Three sides of the temple featured elephant sentries. Many still had trunks intact.
