Chris Wood Reflects on The Vampire Diaries' Best Villain as Kai Returns on Legacies

Kai Parker is back, and he hasn't changed a bit.

Tonight's episode of Legacies welcomes back Chris Wood as The Vampire Diaries' most infamous, most evil bad guy. He's been trapped in a prison world created by his witch nieces for the past decade, but in "Kai Parker Screwed Us," he's ready to party once again.

A couple of episodes ago, Alaric (Matthew Davis), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) found themselves trapped in the prison world, all because of the very annoying Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang), which means they have to contend with whatever else is down there, including their worst nightmare Kai Parker.

Even if you haven't seen The Vampire Diaries in a while, it's hard to forget that wedding scene, where Alaric's pregnant wife Jo was murdered by her twin brother Kai. Kai then later tried to kill Alaric's daughters (who had been magically transported as fetuses into Caroline Forbes, very normal), so you can understand why this family hates him with everything they've got.

Chris Wood says that wedding murder is his favorite evil thing Kai did.

"I mean, it's really, really evil, but that whole wedding thing was pretty dreadful, where he killed his entire family," he told us over the phone. "And I think the reason i would cite that is because it may be the biggest smile we've ever seen on his face in the moment when he's doing it, and that was very fun to play. That's really dark and awful, but it was a great episode."

Wood said he didn't have much trouble getting back into character for Kai, mostly thanks to the writing and the fact that Kai is the kind of completely deranged person who would be thrilled to murder his entire family at a wedding.

"He has kind of no boundaries in terms of what is OK, and what is normal behavior, and he's such an eccentric that he's very freeing as an actor to play him," he says. "No choice is really wrong with him, and the wrong choice would be not making a big one, so that part was easy to rediscover because it's like, oh yeah, I can do whatever I want."

Kai has truly done some of the worst things that anyone ever did on The Vampire Diaries, but we all love him anyway for some reason. Wood can only guess why.

"I honestly don't know. I don't know if I should be concerned," he said, laughing. "I think what's so fun about it is how irredeemable he is, paired with how goofy he is. On a surface level, he seems like kind of awkward and annoying and his sense of humor is really strange. But then he's done all these atrocious things, some of the worst things the history of the Vampire Diaries universe. I mean, he essentially killed Elena. He's pretty terrible."

(For the record, Kai just put a really mean eternal slumber curse on her while Nina Dobrev left the show, but she did get to wake up in the series finale.)

Legacies isn't used to monsters like Kai. He's not an evil Cupid or a dragon or even on the level of the Necromancer, but he's a beast all his own, with a much deeper in-show history than any of the big bads have had before.

"Honestly it was so great to be that sort of unique monster, because the show has a very different approach to this Salvatore-based universe," Wood says. "Kai is very different from anyone they've ever dealt with, and also he has, you know, not to quote the title of the show, but he has this deep legacy where all the characters there have heard the horror stories and know how awful he was. It just presents a really different interaction with a monster, because he is a monster, just one in human form."

He's also a monster who killed Alaric's wife and Josie and Lizzie's mother, so while he's technically the twins' uncle and this is technically a family reunion, it's not a happy one at all. You can imagine how Alaric will react to his greatest enemy: badly.

"[The reunion] is every bit as confusing and full of anger and spite as you would imagine that it would be," Wood says. "Kai loves nothing more than a toy, and for him, someone to play mind games with, to torture, to trick, I mean that's when he feels things. So that's his one fuzzy place is ruining people's equilibrium, so it's full of that."

Josie in particular finds herself going head to head with Kai in unexpected ways, and Wood says the teen witch surprises her evil uncle a little bit, in a way that's almost not so horrible. Almost. Sort of.

"Kai at first still views her as that little kid, the one death that got away. He at first thinks it's going to be easy, and that she's stupid, and he can just get her to do whatever, and then I think there's a weird pride that eventually comes up when he starts to see her fight back and trying to outsmart him," he says. "But you know it's the Kai Parker brand of pride, because it still involves wanting to chop her head off."

Will Kai chop Josie's head off? Will he murder another entire family? Will he prompt another deranged storyline about unborn babies moving wombs, or will he surprise us all and do something brand new?

You'll have to wait until tonight's episode to find out!

Legacies' Chris Wood Talks Kai's Return and That Malivore Twist

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for the latest episode of Legacies, "Kai Parker Screwed Us." Read at your own risk!]

Kai Parker (Chris Wood) is back, and honestly, it was everything we ever hoped for and more! In the first part of Legacies' two-part guest star arc for Wood, Kai was back to his usual tricks, lying, stealing, and manipulating people all with a smile on his face. We even got another short musical number from him!

Most of Thursday's episode, "Kai Parker Screwed Us," focused on Josie's (Kaylee Bryant) reluctant partnership with Kai, who appeared to be on Team Gemini so long as it got him out of his prison world. Unfortunately, Josie broke the cardinal rule of dealing with Kai Parker — never believe a word that comes out of his mouth.

While Alaric (Matthew Davis) was paying for past sins regarding the students he expelled from the Salvatore School and sent to the prison world, and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) was having a very Klaroline-esque date with Sebastian (Thomas Doherty), Josie was faced with a pretty impossible decision. In order to escape the prison world, Josie had to shatter the Mora Miserium hourglass to become powerful enough to create a door back to the real world without an ascendant — all before Kai took a swan dive into the Malivore pit in a bid to escape himself, thus erasing himself (and the knowledge of how to escape) from her memory.

The craziest part? Kai fell right into the Malivore pit in the prison world and popped back out in the real world, ready to wreak havoc on Mystic Falls again! TV Guide talked to Chris Wood about reprising his fan-favorite character and got the scoop on what's next on Kai's agenda in part two. Read on.

What was it like stepping back into Kai's shoes again after all this time?

Chris Wood: Honestly, it was so great. I can't say I was scared to go back, but there was a part of me that was wondering how hard was going to be the drop back in because it's been a considerable amount of time. And when I first played this character, it was 2014 or something? It feels like forever ago, and I guess it has been a lot of years. So there was, not a hesitation, but there was the question mark. Like, is this going to be smooth to drop back in? And honestly, that's where the writing comes in so handy. I feel like, thankfully having Brett [Matthews] still around and obviously Julie [Plec], and then Thomas [Brandon], one of the new writers watched a few episodes [of The Vampire Diaries] and very quickly got a hang of what Kai's like. The dialogue helps so much because as soon as there's those nasty one liners, it just kind of drops you right back to Kai Parker. It was so fun, honestly. It was a breath of fresh air for me to get to play him again.

Kai and Josie had such an awesome back-and-forth dynamic in this episode, so what was the funnest part of finding that relationship with Kaylee Bryant?

Wood: Oh, it was so fun. Working Kaylee was a blast. I loved how Kaylee plays sort of the assessment of Kai. She definitely had the fear and the distance, but then you see her also so furious at him. I think what was fun to play in those scenes was her balancing her distance and her anger with how to navigate dealing with him because obviously she knows all the stories and she's heard nothing but how horrible he is and not to trust him, but then he sort of presented her with these alternative facts. She's like, "Wait a second, I think maybe I actually do have to work with him to figure this out." That was so fun to play with Kaylee, and she's just a great actor and a fun person to be around.

And where do we go from here now that Kai has essentially been unleashed on the world again?

Wood: He sure has, yeah. He's definitely ready to create havoc at a moment's notice. I don't know how easy it will be to get rid of him now that he's in whatever state he's in. He always has a plan, it always involves killing people, and it's never good when he's around. So, I would expect that the heroes have some trouble to deal with.

I know you probably can't see too much, but did you get to share scenes with any other Legacies kids in next week's episode?

Wood: I did, yeah. And I don't want to spoil too much, but the first episode was really just Kai and Josie, really. Kai's next episode, he encounters some other characters and he also uses a tactic that we've never really seen him use before. And it's very fun and kind of silly, but a bunch of people who don't actually know what he looks like but have heard stories might not see him walk in somewhere and know who he is right off the bat. So, he kind of uses that to his advantage in a very entertaining way.

We've asked Jenny Boyd and Kaylee Bryant which twin they thought was more like Kai, but now that you've had some experience with them, which do you think has more Kai in them?

Wood: Just purely from a hands-on standpoint of working with Kaylee so much in this episode, I would say probably Josie right now. And when she's got that dark thing going on, obviously, the soullessness is something that she would share with her uncle when she's in that place. I think they've done a nice job on the show of kind of presenting them both with possible elements of Kai and keeping that sort of up in the air if somebody's gonna get a little too much of Uncle Kai in their blood. I would say Josie just because I saw elements of her craftiness, and you can see when she's gone dark that things aren't great for people. So that's my vote.

‘Legacies:’ Kai Parker’s Return and the Sphinx’s Prophecy

Legacies fans got an exclusive first look at TVD alum Kai Parker’s return thanks to Entertainment Weekly. EW reported that Kai’s return will be a part of a two-parter, which starts with his return in Legacies Season 2 Episode 12, “Kai Parker Screwed Us.”

EW’s sneak peek also gave fans an inside look at one of Kai’s lines from the episode. At some point during the episode, the infamous villain will say, “Welcome to the supernatural Hunger Games.”

This all goes along with the giant machete Kai is holding in the photo that came along with EW’s first look. It’s safe to say that Kai believes the strongest and smartest will survive the supernatural Hunger Games. Knowing Kai, he probably believes the odds are ever in his favor.

Kai looks like he’s at the old mill in the EW exclusive photo. The fairy lights and copious amounts of alcohol feel reminiscent of the parties the Salvatore students would throw in the real world. It also looks like a place Kai would hold himself up in to have the higher ground during the supernatural Hunger Games.

Kai is also wearing a nametag in that photo. He is the type of psychotic villain that would introduce himself to people before he syphons their magic and kills them.

Kai also has an advantage because he’s no stranger to prison worlds. He is first seen in the one his family banished him to in Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries. Kai is last seen in a prison world that Bonnie Bennett built with the help of Josie and Lizzie during Season 8 of TVD.

Kai’s relationship with the prison world that fans will see on this week’s episode may be another clue to the sphinx’s prophecy from Legacies Season 2 Episode 7, “It Will All Become Painfully Clear Soon Enough.”

The prophecy goes like this:

“There are two prisoners. One is the master of his cage. The other returns home without power. The sins of the father are visited upon the daughters here. And not here. New hero rises, but can be felled by the golden arrow. The wolf among you has many faces. When time fractures, darkness overwhelms. But the greatest destroyer of all is love.”

The prisoners referenced have to be Kai and the Necromancer. Since the Necromancer returned as a prison of Malivore to Mystic Falls without powers, Kai is most definitely the master of his cage. This is expected because the prison world Kai has been in for at least a decade was made specifically for him.

The sins of the father aka Alaric will likely unfold in “Kai Parker Screwed Us” because the prophecy goes on to explain those sins are reflected onto the daughters here and not here. That probably means both in the prison world and back in Mystic Falls.

Whatever happens between Josie, Lizzie, and their uncle will surely stick with them for quite some time.

That being said, if Kai encounters some of the Salvatore students and syphons some magic from them, he may have the upper hand when he comes face to face with Ric, Josie, and Lizzie again.

Let’s not forget about the hourglass full of black magic that’s sitting somewhere in that prison world. That can’t lead to anything good.

The situation becomes even more terrifying knowing that Kai can be quite persuasive whenever he holds the life of a loved one in his hands. If Kai wants to find a way out of the prison world and needs Josie to lean towards the dark side to do it, he could put Ric and Lizzie in a compromising position to push Josie to her breaking point.

We wouldn’t be shocked if Kai uses that wicked hourglass to his advantage before the episode ends.

As much as we want all of our favorite characters who aren’t sociopaths to come out of the prison world unscathed, it would be kind of cool to see Bad Josie and Kai team up, even if the diabolical duo works together for a short period of time.

We’re only okay with that situation if Josie leaves the prison world herself and not consumed with black magic.

Ric, Josie, Lizzie, Sebastian, and Kai are just a few of the people fending for themselves in the prison world. It’s safe to say this prison world is a crucible of pent-up rage, and we think it’s unlikely everyone will survive the Legacies two-parter.
