a really long post about my views on the bundesliga’s lack of competition
ok im gonna try and make this as least rambly as i can tho as it’s me, that’s a tough challenge. feel free not to read this i just had to get it out there lol
TLDR- it's not bayerns fault the bundesliga has lacked competition. it’s to do with mismanagement and financial issues across the board
it’s truly fascinating that people blame bayern for the bundesliga’s lack of competition, as if other clubs in the bundesliga don’t have a rampant history of mismanagement and german football clubs in general havent fallen prey to finanical issues. i shouldnt have to write this post but here goes
historic clubs like kaiserslauten are rotting away in the 3.liga due to their own financial ineptitudes (with kaiserslauten only retaining their license, by the way, because of the charity game bayern played with them). rostock are also in 3.liga due to financial shortfalls which stem from the issues with west german vs east german football which still plague the league to this day, with RB Leipzig, owned by red bull and having money pumped into them, being the most prominent eastern german football team at the moment, while sides like cz jena, dynamo dresden and cottbus linger miserably in lower leagues. union is only a recent addition into the bundesliga. this shows that the divide between east german and west german football is a reason for the lack of variery in competition. how is this a problem created by bayern, you ask? i don’t have an answer for you.
a glittering example that’s right there in front of people’s eyes to show how big of a problem the bundsliga has with mismanagement is HSV!!!! it’s right there, people! HSV is probably the most striking display of managerial incompetence im seeing in germany right now, a club with such a big history and with so much potential is seen as a ridiculous joke club in germany, all due to its disgusting management! hamburg is one of the biggest metropolitan areas in germany and its club should reflect that status, but instead theyve got a conveyor belt of terrible coaches and achieved the delightful record of being relegated for the first time in history in the 2017-18 season. a potential club that could well compete for the bundesliga if run properly, in the second league, because of their own incompetence! how is this bayern’s fault? well, let me tell you- it fucking isn’t.
and oh, yes, what about stuttgart? remember stuttgart winning the league in 2007? sure do. mario gomez and sami khedira were great players, weren’t they?lets take a look at vfb- oh. they got relegated this season. and were relegated in the 15-16 season. oh dear. their management isn’t looking too hot either! i wonder if we’re seeing a running theme? a club that by all means should be good enough to not be sitting at the bottom of the barrel and be reaching for the top, sitting in the lower leagues because of- you guessed it- poor management. stuttgart is such an obvious example that i don’t even think i have to explain it anymore
what about schalke? a club that came 2nd only in the 2017-18 season, fell right to 14th, all because of- wait- bayern leeching their players? bayern using their money and weight to bully them? NO!!!! bad fucking management all around! and schalke is one of the top clubs in the world with club revenue!!! theyve got the money!!! theyve been competing for the top of the table consistently for ages! and now theyve swung to the bottom again, in that classic bundesliga way! schalke dont even have an excuse for their incompetence, its not like they’re poor or anything. sorry, let me correct myself, bayern’s relentless dominance made them sad and unmotivated and as a result their board are waiting for dortmund to start winning the bundesliga to get them moving again.
gladbach had multiple high profile players leave the club in the late nineties due to some of the garbage performances they were putting out. they had financial issues galore (wow, im starting to see a faint pattern, but haven’t connected the dots fully yet) and opened a new stadium in order to alleviate some of their problems. these days, after certain initiatives and a few kicks in the ass of the board, they seem to be doing better. curious, isn’t it? a club doing better business doing better in the bundesliga? if we forget about how they once again went into free fall at the end of the bundesliga season- but that was bayern’s fault, of course, sorry. i forgot to mention that
and ahh, hertha. berlin, capital city of germany, one of the biggest european cities, yeah, you’d expect a london-type situation, right? with multiple big clubs competing in the top tier of european football as well? lmao, no. constantly in debt in the past, mediocre to the extreme, lacking all the necessary qualities of a capital city club. midtable hertha and union are berlin’s only bundesliga reps. to be fair to hertha theyve done very good business this window so i expect this to look up and steadily progress. but of course it was bayern’s presence that limited their development.
leverkusen are neverkusen and that is that.
and finally, for the 2 people reading this post who have been waiting for it- borussia dortmund. this club is everyone’s favourite, they’re the poor underdogs who are bullied by nasty bayern who leech everyone and everything they have from them. they got 3 players from dortmund- 2 players at the end of their contract and götze, which ruined them :(((( except- has anyone checked to see how many players dortmund have taken from other clubs in the bundesliga? you might be surprised by what you find.
dortmund has a terrible history of financial mismanagement. they had massive debts but still didn’t get their license revoked by the dfb while east german clubs were getting fucked left and right. bayern loaned them money but lets skip over that because bayern are fucking evillll but they nearly went bankrupt in 2005. their shares dropped by like 80% on the frankfurt stock exchange and they had to cut their players wages by 20%. it’s called signal iduna park until 2021 to reduce some of the debts they have. from 2006-2008, dortmund had seasons which ran the gamut from utterly mediocre to completely shit. it was only until klopp came that they picked up the pace again and actually offered some great bundesliga football with their young players, and theyve been much better ever since with the exception of THAT season where they faced relegation and had the majority of their squad injured. now theyve finally become a top contender for the title. theyre also doing much better business. is there a correlation? nah i dont see it bayern sucks and have finally stopped holding dortmund hostage.
it’s not 50+1 that’s the issue either, because bayern has proven that you can have that rule and still be extremely successful. bayern built their way up and became competent in europe and domestically and uli and kalle, no matter how you may think of them now, have a reputation as the most sound board in europe (LETS NOT TALK ABOUT HOW THATS GOING THESE DAYS). 50+1 can work if you do it right. and these clubs, schalke and dortmund and whatnot, they have the fucking money for it. hamburg couldve easily stopped themselves from decaying so badly. stuttgart too. don’t be fooled by any stupid poor meek underdog charade.
i think i’ve given more than enough reasons for you to consider an alternate take to the tired, fucking exhausted argument that bayern is the bane of the bundesliga. it’s time to start realising that bundesliga clubs have really shot themselves in the foot in the past and there is a general climate of gross incompetence in the bundesliga in general. bayern is not the issue. we have helped out clubs in financial disarray a whole fucking lot, including our own city rivals, 1859+1!!! st.pauli! fortuna sittard! dortmund! offenbach! rostock!
shit is improving, though. for sure. the league has always had interesting battles, for example for europe, and now clubs are doing better business and starting to rise up (if you forget schalke... and eintracht... and stuttgart... and hamburg... and-) you’ve still got nonsense like frankfurt selling jovic and haller for peanuts (haller for 40mio in this market is BULLSHIT), but clubs like hertha and dortmund actually doing good business instead of doing the rubbish they used to do, and clubs generally being managed better, is what we want to see in the long run for the bundesliga.
