Beyond the observable universe, far removed from the realities governed by natural law, there was the realm of higher beings. Kiki’s little post office, with its pale wooden boards and shuttered windows and stripped awning looked rather out of place; it was dwarfed by the likes grand structures like the City of Books, and those lavish smoking rooms where more sophisticated witches liked to hold meetings.
Inside was just as modest as the outside. The space was a wash of pale colors, enlivened by a collection of potted flowers. Kiki sat behind her counter, her chin propped up by a hand as she started listlessly into the neverwhere. A legion of black cats leapt in and out of the windows, either occupied with taking outgoing mail or placing incoming mail in the wall of mail cubbies behind her.
The chorus of meowing and the constant bustle did little to stir her from her daydream, but the chime of a ringing bell - the sound of a customer, prompted her to rise from her stool and summon some enthusiasm.
❝Kiki’s Postal Service, how my I he--❞ Kiki’s expression suddenly turned dark, and her nose wrinkled as if a foul wind had blown into the room. Amid the long pause she had taken, she forced herself to take a breath and put on a neutral face.
❝Oh...Hello, Lady Lamdadelta,❞ It was a poor attempt at cordiality, which was made clear by her flat tone of voice. ❝And what brings you here today?❞
