     The spellwork she had been left with seemed simple, or perhaps her teacher was just excellent at making everything look easy. Days passed and she wasn’t able to compel so much as a feather to levitate, and in her frustration she busied herself with keeping house. Organizing Howl’s mess was time-consuming, and it made her feel productive.

     She was seated on her broom, dusting the rafters when the dial at the front door began to spin. Only then did it occur to her that the better part of the week had slipped by and she was no closer to mastering that spell than when Howl had initially departed. 

     ❝Oh, welcome home,❞ she murmured at the wizard once he appeared in the door frame, smiling with the effort to conceal her guilt. Maybe if she didn’t bring it up, he wouldn’t either.

     For years Kiki had her heart set on taking her maiden journey to a faraway place, somewhere more sophisticated than the little village she had grown up in. Her mother was adamant that she stay in the country, but her fanciful notions of the West had clouded her better judgment with a rose-colored haze. She didn’t anticipate having to cope with doors being slammed in her face or the brusqueness of strangers. She never imagined how blue the dreary weather and thick fog would make her. Dreams of working as a garden-girl, and perhaps developing a talent for botanic magic, were quickly dashed and exchanged for a willingness to accept that her journey wouldn’t unfold as she intended.

     Kiki’s search eventually steered her to one of the homes she had initially avoided. She had spotted it several nights ago when she was out flying to clear her head. It was a lovely sight, and it was surely just as luxuriant on the inside...but it was secluded, shrouded by mist and guarded by trees. She wanted to be swept up in the bustle of the big city, but as the days trudged by she let go of that childish fancy.

    ❝Alright, Jiji. Maybe we’ll find some luck here,❞ she whispered to her familiar as the manor came into view. He threw a skeptical glance at her in response, which Kiki chose to ignore. 

     She felt small walking in the shadow of such a grand place, daunted by its unfamiliarity and humbled by her situation. After facing more rejections than she cared to count, it seemed foolish to seek employment here, but what remained of her weathered hope kept her encouraged.

     As they neared the manor’s doors, Jiji leapt from his perch on the witch’s shoulder to hide behind her legs. Kiki paused to smooth out her dress and pat the wind out her hair. She gave her broom a tight squeeze for comfort before mustering up the courage to finally knock on the door.

headcanon: kiki’s relationship with her parents (but its mostly kokiri with just a dash of okino)

a continuation of this post

Kiki has a good relationship with both of her parents, but she has always been a bit of a daddy’s girl. Okino is the more lenient parent, and his relaxed personality makes him easy to talk to. Because his wife and daughter have very different personalities that put them at odds with one another at times, he typically ends up being the mediator of the family. 

Kokiri is a wary traditionalist who devotes scrupulous attention to detail to all that she does. Kiki, on the other hand, often shirks tradition in favor of following her intuition. Throughout her maiden journey, she has matured and learned to act with some measure of caution, but in her younger days, she was incredibly impulsive and headstrong. Her spontaneity, naivety, and fierce desire for independence used to clash with Kokiri’s worrisome nature and need for structure.

Many of Kokiri and Kiki’s disagreements stemmed from their opposing approaches to magic. Kokiri used to lament about Kiki’s lack of interest and patience for herbalism and potioncraft. Traditional teaching methods and pouring over grimoires to commit formulas and invocations to memory yielded limited degrees of success with her daughter. Kiki is a hands-on learner who prefers to move at her own pace. Much of what she has learned has been through physical experiences.

In spite of their differences, Kiki and Kokiri share deep bond. Kokiri has always been supportive of her daughter and she is proud of her bravery and willingness to work hard. And Kiki admires Kokiri more than anyone in the world. Leaving home has only deepened this appreciation, and she will never take her mother's lessons in witchcraft and life for granted.
