♫What was your first impression of it? When I first got to listen to Kalafina’s 5th album 「far on the water」, there were three songs I took an immediate liking to and 五月の魔法 / Gogatsu no Mahou was one of them (the other two being うすむらさき/ Usumurasaki and 灯影/ Hokage). As Yuki Kajiura herself has mentioned once, the song has a typical Kalafina vibe and I couldn’t agree more. It encompasses everything I like about Kalafina, great melody, great instrumentals, great harmonies! I am a sucker for strings so I am always drawn to Kala-songs that start with a cool strings arrangement. This was also the first orginal song from the album we got to hear live during the “NicoNico live show with Lisani” so it really left a lasting impression on me.
♫How do you feel about it now? I really like it!! It’s not among my top five favourite Kala-songs or anything but I really enjoy listening to it (especially when I am walking home from work). And I gotta say, their performance at the 『Kalafina ”far on the water” Special Final』 was pretty awesome. Actually being in the audience made this song so much more special for me. I REALLY hope we will get a recording of that acoustic performance during their Nikko live because I am sure it must have been gorgeous! Also really can’t wait for the release of their 『Kalafina “9+ONE』 BD which also includes a performance of this song!

♫How does it make you feel? This was also mentioned by Yuki Kajiura and the girls but the rhythm of the song kinda makes you feel somewhat “antsy” for lack of a better word. It makes you want to get up and do something.
♫What do you like most about this song? The strings arrangement and how Wakana and Keiko almost seem to imitate the sound of the strings with their voices in the chorus.
♫What’s your least favourite part about it? Wakana struggles a bit in some of the super high parts so I am not a huge fan of those. In her defense, I think this song is very hard to sing.
♫ Best version of the song? This is so hard since I have neither heard the Nikko version nor the one from their 『9+ONE』 concert so I kinda wanna reserve judgement on that. But so far I would have to go with their performance from the 『far on the water』 Special Final.
♫Favourite lines in the lyrics?海を知らない The beautiful water drawn by a child子供が描いた who has never seen the sea奇麗な水がほんとうの海 is the most honest depiction of the ocean失くしたくないものなら Things we never want to loseいつだってここにあるwill forever be here in this placeI am pretty sure that Wakana has stated somewhere that this is her favourite part of the lyrics and I can totally understand why. It’s gorgeous and she sings these lines beautifully. That’s why I am also utterly in love with them.
♫Thoughts on the musical arrangement and the use of instruments?Well, I am certainly no music nerd so I can’t say much about this but as I have mentioned earlier, I REALLY love the strings.
♫Wakana, Keiko or Hikaru? Whose vocals are most impressive in this song? I’d say in this song they all get to shine and some of the best parts are when they are harmonising with each other. But if push comes to shove I’d have to choose Wakana. Despite some struggles here and there, her vocals are amazing in this song!

Also, a short anecdote from the 『far on the water Special FInal』 I attended. At this point of the concert (three songs in) I was really worried about Wakana because she was sweating a lot but turns out she didn’t have any trouble afterwards. I think she was probably a little exhausted from all the dancing in monochrome.
