"Ishtar plaque from Kalakh, Iraq, early 1st millennium bce. Or to be more accurate, the Hurrian goddess Shaushka, wrapped into the Babylonian framework as "Ishtar of Nineveh," which is right near Kalakh. Winged, crowned, breast armored, with the nubby vulva familiar to many via the Elamite goddess figurines ("Inanna," but really Kiririsha - another case of the original ethnic name eclipsed by imperial power). And the turned-out toes, a signature of this winged goddess whose image spread from Syria all the way to northwest India, where she appears on the ringstones."
