there truly was no definite guide on how to approach (or, in this case, be approached) by someone shorter than you. what was the optimal position so that there were no strange cricks in the neck? hibiki’s eyes slanted to the side and he caught sight of a nice little couch in this more open meeting between guilds. he turned back towards the one and only kora bellezza with a smile on his face. one of the most proficient users of transformation magic and — partner of one of his newest favorite lamia scale members.

adam saunders was, at first glance, not a crowd stopper. he was not as flashy as some of his contemporaries and not even as flashy as hibiki himself could be. but that mattered less once anyone truly got to know him. the man was organized, sharp, smart and ready with the most terrible puns at any given moment. he kept hibiki on an intellectual happy edge and it was truly a long time since he felt that pull and excitement. normally, hibiki preferred more adventurous quests strictly with his own team and/or jenny. adam was the first exception in a long time and hibiki left the mission with high and low spirits. high because it was fun and he made a friend and low because he had to say goodbye.

“bellezza-san,” hibiki dipped his head low in greeting. here, at least, he did not need to put up a flirty front. not that it was all a front, he was something of a natural flirt, but there was something relaxing about not having to flirt. “you know, it’s funny because i definitely heard a lot about you from adam as well.” he caught her eyes and offered her his arm, “if you’d like, we can sit over there and talk more. i do want to hear some more domino stories and if it’s true that you are an excellent dancer.”

“i’m happy that other guilds came so that there’s less of a chance of me seeing neil.” lyon said nonchalantly to kora, sipping on his eggnog. his nose scrunched up again and he took another sip and then sighed. “i thought yuka gave me non alcoholic eggnog...”

hibiki peered down to the cup in his hands and then flickered his gaze right back up to the woman before him. she certainly was a wonder, wasn’t she? he’s never ... cared much for tea before. and yet, here, he felt a new appreciation for the mystic and old art of tea making.

“i can say with full honesty here — this is the first time i’ve fully appreciated tea. how did you do it?”

i. ultear hates circuses. theyre a waste of space and time, HOWEVER, she will go to one if someone she cares about asks. its all about the sacrifices.

ii. re: books, she doesnt just read research heavy ones. she also likes fictional tales. she also enjoys little comics normally of the slice of life variety. 

iii. what makes her laugh ranges from puns and dad jokes to obscure humor layered in irony. obviously, she’s a woman of Taste

iv. her preferred alcoholic beverage is just a gin and tonic. and possibly tequila if its available. 

v. she knows she should probably invest in some form of daily planner, but she really doesnt want to. she has mental lists at the ready, why write them out? the notebooks she has are about other stuff, not daily plans. 

vi. when she first got to era she had, what some would call, a hot girl summer. it did end however when she began to date a kindergarten teacher named kora bellezza. ;)

ultear did care for kora as much as she could allow herself to when they met in era all those years ago. i mean, it’s a wild story from beginning to end. ultear really was out there living a triple life and dating a kindergarten teacher! it happens! i think, back then, ultear enjoyed her time with kora and didn’t really know ... why. but now that things are Very Different and she has an objective third party to point things out to her: she knows it’s because a part of her yearned to feel normal! it’s sad and tragic but that’s ultear! the feelings and the need to feel that way have waned, but she still does respect kora a lot and feels bad for how messy things got in the end.

     HIBIKI & KORA

hibiki didn’t really care that much about tea before kora. he drank it, especially because master bob always made him some, but really? it was alright. and then he met and got to know kora and she somehow....made him into a tea drinker? he’s as surprised as his teammates are. he has Opinions on different blends (mostly whatever kora tells him, he absorbs) now and can and does prepare it himself. she morphed him into a tea drinker by being herself.

a part of her mind immediately wanted to snap — no, of course not, what are you a child? we never get choices in life — but she didn’t. it wouldn’t look good and it would be wildly different than the ultear milkovich, council member, would have people beleive. after all in the meetings doesn’t she always say that mages should get the choice to do what they wish in their magic? and only when it harms others should they act? it was so easy to let certain people cause chaos and focus the council’s attentions, thank you makarov dreyar and yajima, she though silently. they really made her job a lot more easier. and thank you as well, to master hades for knowing his old members so well. 

instead, ultear smiled prettily at kora. “i mean, there is only one opened restaurant right now so if we wanted to eat out we’d have to go there. but...” she purred. ultear looked at kora, looked at someone she was going to hurt down the line and yet, for some reason, she couldn’t resist. she was addicted to these feelings she felt with this kindergarten teacher. such a simple life seemingly and yet. and yet maybe that was what it was. if she let herself truly think about it but, yet, she shouldn’t. she had several jobs to do and at the moment it was to be an alluring date.

“i can cook for us? you can relax and tell me about your week with the little ones and i can bitch to you about the council — all confidential of course.” ultear joked. it was easy to joke sometimes. but she did miss meredy. she wondered if she could finally convince master hades to finally let her have meredy in era with her, so she can explore the city and maybe even talk to kids her own age. jellal would be an issue there, but ultear already had millions of believable cover stories.

Ren? was quite cross with our 'best friend'," she could help neither the eye roll nor the air quotes there, "Neil the other day. Now, we obviously don't know what happened there, but as Neil is one of us, I wanted to ask about it."

at first, hibiki was of course DELIGHTED to be in a kora-adam sandwich as it was. his only regret was not taking a couch and instead sitting at a table. but perhaps that was too forward, but it wasn’t as if they would know his inner thoughts. he was too good at hiding those when he wanted. the company was good, the atmosphere was light and with these two—the promise of a lovely distraction from otherwise troubling thoughts on some of the reports he was reading under master bob’s instruction. 

his easy smile shifted as the conversation matter drifted to more unpleasantness. he looked between adam and kora and sighed, his hand reached up to pinch the bridge of his nose. “i will go on record and say that, for the most part, i do enjoy lamia scale and it’s mages. but....well. i will say definitively i am no fan of that neil.” he sighed.

hibiki’s mouth twisted into a grimace as he shrugged. “he was quite rude with ren. now, i don’t generally like to have negative thoughts about people, but he was under the impression that certain rumors were true: one being that his skin tone is somehow fake. it’s...” hibiki shrugged once more as he thought about it. ren didn’t normally do himself many favors and his relationship with blendy-san showed that. but! hibiki knew ren rather well, thank you, and knew that he really was just a man who made mistakes. it didn’t give others permission to be rude. “it’s not a good look — for neil. or his, as ren put it, ‘annoying persistence’ that he was right and ren was wrong. about himself.”

hibiki forced his spirits to rise. he was protective of his friends, that was much was obvious to anyone who truly knew him. “on the brightside for us, though, we don’t have to interact with him much. i extend my sincere condolences to you both. what bad luck.”

It isn’t the first time someone had asked her that same question, almost verbatim. Her answer the first time had been very different than what it was now.

But then again, Briar had not known Mary at the depth she would have liked, which is fair, given the fact that Mary thought she knew herself at the time, too.

And on occasion, Mary has to laugh at how the mind works. She has to, because she’d go mad otherwise.

❝Oh, you know... It happens when you’re made to feel small, sometimes. In my case, that is mostly why.❞ For every time she felt that her opinions were brushed off, or each time she was made to feel less-than. Inexperienced. Naïve.

Accusing Mary of naïveté was perhaps the worst thing one could do to her, in her eyes. Second only to betraying her trust, perhaps.

There were other factors, of course─ones she’d share only with her demons during after-hours. Mary is not stupid, and there are certainly things she should never share out loud.

❝Let people make you feel small enough times, you’re eventually going to feel like you’ve got something to prove. So you do.❞ Mary pauses, admiring a manicured hand. ❝And then throw in a couple of reasons why poking the bear’s a bad idea... Being the bigger person doesn’t have to mean tolerating disrespect.❞
