ah, neil. eva … grimaced. one of these days, lamia scale would surely manage to have a fire mage within their ranks who was not … she was, of course, biased. she had — before she had left and broken up with him — dated jacob, the previous problematic fire mage. and while jacob had been mostly  ( and fatally )  a risk to himself and himself alone, neil was just an asshole. there was no way of sugarcoating this. in all likelihood, it would probably not be deadly, unless he would be his — usual, charming self to someone who was disinclined to let him get away with it and would shut him up, permanently.

“ very creative, very colourful, ” she replied, rubbing the back of her neck. “ i’ll give you a list … some of the terms i coaxed out of jura along the years so … i hope you put my hard work to good use. ”

she was convinced that jura had humoured her, mostly, when she had asked him for  bad words  in his native language. she had claimed that she had wanted to understand  real bosconian  as opposed to what the books she had used to study were inclined to teach her, but she had also been fifteen. and probably a bit of a brat, too.

lyon smirked at that. a wonderful idea indeed. he nodded and briefly daydreamed of the times he could use it once he, sherry and the kids returned to zinnia. all those little annoyances from neil. and there was no way someone like him would know more than one language. 

“i look forward to it.” he told her. “and trust me, i will. though i will be wise not to repeat anything near the children.” sure they were young and didn’t know any words yet, but it was good practice for when the inevitably go the age where they started repeating every single word. “maybe i’ll surprise jura one of these days with a word. surprise a laugh out of him.”

arania was not sure why she kept  bothering  her fellow fate’s brother like this, what she had to gain from this. maybe it was some kind of misguided instinct; knowing that he had a secret yet being unable to tell what it was. these things tended to annoy her as they were a constant pull on the edge of her consciousness, a pull she could never fully shake off. maybe she should go see cyrus when she was done, just to ask if the other fate knew what it was like — and if she wanted to go grab some food together.  “ if you  were  cyrus, you’d know that i don’t really  do  threats, ” the blonde said, nearly cheerful as she took a sip of her coffee. “ and even you would know if i  had  threatened you. by the way … how’s your mother doing? still mad at théro? ”

lyon rolled his eyes at her. it was a joke anyway but he was not much of a joker, he never was and he COULD see why it would be taken that way. he sipped the flash he carried with him, but relied on it much less as of recently. “well. i’m not cyrus.” and he wondered how much the other wished she was talking to his sister. he shrugged at the question of his mother. “she’s fine. and another question possibility more suited for cyrus.” he almost asked how his sister was doing, but decided not to. if cyrus wanted to speak to him, she would do so on her own will now that he was. back.

“ just don’t make me sadder than i am right now, ” she replied as she leaned into his touch, thoughts growing messy beneath her carefully styled hair. she was not her father, she mused with a grim expression. her father, he could have fixed this. he was older and thus, more powerful than she was. he would know how to fix this, how to pour something into lyon’s cracks that would make him strong enough to live to see a recovery come to completion. because … time had been running out for him for a while now. it was not in his face — even death would not mar it with wrinkles, but in his eyes … it was painful to look at him, to see him cracked in all the worst ways.

she took a deep breath, contemplating the situation. earlier, guided by impulse, she had crashed against him like a mighty wave. now, she felt … calmer. softer, too. though she was called the  burning one  for more than one reason, she could be gentle, too. sometimes, they said that the fire in her heart had burnt all that was — unkind to dust, but she knew that this was not true. for her, kindness was a choice. as far as she was concerned, it made it far more powerful than it could have been, had it been simply her nature from the beginning.

“ and don’t make me angry either, ” she said, all terms of endearment feeling  wrong  on her tongue, still. but this was alright, it was not the worst thing that had happened to her. “ don’t leave, don’t leave  me.  i don’t know how to make this right again, but … perhaps, we can find out. together. ”

she leaned into him and the world felt like it came together again. a part of him still wanted to run---to get away from all this and to go back. because one conversation wasn’t healing. healing took a long time, just as dying did, for immortal beings like themselves. but he knew that by accepting even just this, then perhaps he was going a step in the opposite direction and that was all he could for now.

but for the first time in a long time, lyon felt like he was not going into the wrong direction. and maybe that was all that mattered for now. lyon closed his eyes and breathed out slowly against sherry. “i will do my best.” he told her quietly. and maybe for others, that would not be enough to say. but he was a diligent soul and that was something that his mother gave him the moment he came into existence. 

“and that is something i can at least promise you for now ...” he added softly. he had cracks to fill but it was up to himself to fill those. he had to begin to work on the polar zones, sure and fix that mess. he hoped that some of the other nature gods were not around because he did not want to deal with that fallout. he wasn’t strong enough yet. he had to work and he knew it would be hard. because that was life and even an immortal one. even for a god. “i won’t leave you anytime soon, arden.”

"happy birthday, lyon." sherry was glad that she had gotten adam and kora to watch the twins for half an hour so she could make it across town to pick up the food at their favourite restaurant. usually, they would have gone there, but the twins were too young to leave them alone for an evening. "i got us dinner and later, you can unwrap your present. oh, could you set the table? mari is calling."

lyon smiled softly as her and kissed her cheek. he took the food happily and he looked forward to whatever it was sherry had planned for his birthday present. though he did wonder what it was. his main hope would be to just be able to lay down in bed with sherry there, knowing his children were happily asleep. they were beginning to get their own schedules now and could sleep for more hours than they were in the beginning and it was good. 

“thank you sherry.” he told her. he got to setting the table---mari was crying, just a bit and soon jules would join in unless his sister was calmed. they really were like clockwork. and his family was happy. and healthy and that was the best birthday gift he could get.

“if they miss their papa, just let me know.” he called after her, smiling as he got dinner ready. he was already counting down the months until they began teething it will be. an interesting time. he knew sherry was dreading it and he was as well.
