Happy birthday to Kalmiya!

Today is her -512th birthday!

Kalmiya was a "smart" AI created by Dr. Catherine Halsey. Her primary purpose was to test prototypes of cyberwarfare and infiltration technology. Once tested and refined, the software and subroutines would then be incorporated into Cortana, giving her capabilities far beyond the rest of her kind. In this way, Kalmiya can be considered Cortana's predecessor.

Halsey extended Kalmiya's functionality by making subtle--and illegal--changes to her over time, which were so small that only Halsey noticed. UNSC protocol dictated that Kalmiya was to be decommissioned once her testing was complete, which Halsey outright disobeyed. Halsey kept Kalmiya until the fall of Reach, where she would have to either be sent away with the Forerunner data she was researching under CASTLE base, or destroyed to keep her out of the Covenant's hands. Ultimately, Halsey choose to let Cortana be the custodian of the data, believing that Kalmiya was the more unstable choice due to her longevity.

Halsey activated a fail-safe destruction protocol in Kalmiya, having previously lied to her about the existence of such a subroutine in her code. Despite this, Kalmiya was understanding and seemingly accepted her termination.

Seven years later, Blue Team returned to Reach to access Halsey's lab. Her lab contained a cryo-vault with additional clones she'd made of herself to extract their brains and use to make artificial intelligence like Cortana. The hope was that the brains could be used to make an artificial intelligence that would functionally be a clone of Cortana, which they could use to stop her after she began subjugating the galaxy. One of these clones would be used to create the Weapon.

When John and Kelly arrived at the lab, they were surprised to find a damaged Kalmiya keeping watch over the vault. They surmised that Kalmiya created a fragment of herself before her destruction to ensure the survival of the samples. After bypassing her with a security code, they left as the ghostly fragment watched them.

Does that count as alive?? I guess she was never "alive". I don't know man I just throw birthday parties here.

In canon (~2560), she is turning 23!

Is Kalmiya still on Reach under the ruins of Castle Base?

I only ask because Shadows of Reach never made it clear.

Even if she’s just a splinter or subroutine now.

I was bingeing the halo games after Reach was adding to the Master chief Collection and I can not wait for Halo Infinite. I was also curious with the new A.I number~ CTN-043-0, So I created Catrina, another addition to Halsey’s A.I collection. Good job, she has several brain scans. xD 

But I also couldn’t draw Catrina without her older ‘Sisters’, Kalmiya (Halsey’s first) and Cortana~ 

I based Kalmiya’s Design after several pic’s I found on google, I not sure who created them but props got to them for that. 

I don’t own Cortana or Kalmiya, they were created by the creators of the halo games and books. I just created Catrina.

Koletre Grounds

It was usually busy in Halsey’s shop, but customers ebbed and flowed like anything else and there was currently a lull. John was always up early-- habit, he supposed-- but he usually waited until 1100 hours before he came in himself, to miss the morning rush. Though he usually didn’t come in alone.

It took no time at all to spot Cortana behind the register, small but imposing all the same. Hair dyed blue with matching lipstick and circuitboard sleeve tattoos that her mother rolled her eyes at, it took only a little more than no time for her to meet his eyes. Not that it would have been surprising anyway, he tended to catch people’s attention, a difficult reality for a man both awkward and shy.

Fortunately, Cortana was neither of those things and understood the situation immediately. With that familiar smile she called across the room, “Go sit down John, I’ll be over in a second.” That was Cortana-speak for ‘I’m taking a break, cry about it’ and the ever-dutiful Kalmiya switched places with her seamlessly.

John settled himself at his group’s usual table, enjoying the momentary peacefulness of quietude in a usually heaving space. He observed the quieter of the sisters cleaning the counter, his eyes drawn to the movement but lacking the intensity of study. She was familiar with his observation as he was with her presence and as ever, both were content with the quiet.

Cortana wasn’t one for quiet. She squeezed out from behind the counter with his usual, her apron tossed aside with energy and little care. She tilted her head to the side as she set down his drink, and he felt the beginnings of a smile pull at his scarred lips.

“So, I’m getting your undivided attention this morning? You sure know how to make a girl feel special.”

She sat down next to him, her leg brushing his, as he briefly canted his own head in response. “Wouldn’t want you feeling neglected.”

The small woman’s smile widened and she rested her chin in her hand with interest. “What brings a guy like you to a place like this all on his lonesome? Kelly driving you nuts today?”

John grimaced faintly, hiding it with a sip of his tea. “No.” After a hesitation, Cortana waiting expectantly, he elaborated. “Fred’s meeting up with someone. Kelly and Linda know her so they went too.” I was invited but was too nervous to go, only to find myself bored and lonely in the empty house went unsaid, but she heard it anyway.

“So I’m your rebound date? Classy.”

Playfully, Cortana reached over and lightly flicked his arm as if in scolding, her healthy skin seeming starkly pale next to his.

“I get off my shift early today.”

The large veteran knew that, but he met his friend’s eyes in questioning all the same. She knew that he knew that, so why bring it up?

“I’m gonna be meeting up with Miranda and Avery around 2:30 if you wanna join us? We don’t have anything planned really, just catching up.”

That smile was pulling at the corners of John’s mouth again. He’d missed those two. “Sounds good. I’ll pick you up.”

She had that cheeky look on her face, no doubt about to finish off with ‘it’s a date’, only for her mother to appear from the back of the shop.

“Cortana, what have you done to the steam injector? Good morning, John. You’re looking well.” He didn’t get a chance to respond. “Get out here and fix it! You’re lucky we’re quiet right now.”

Rolling her eyes, Cortana rose from her seat. “Duty calls.” She ruffled his hair as she went past, and John couldn’t bring himself to pretend to be annoyed. It had taken some time to get used to his hair being longer than 3cm (and that was under duress), and he’d found himself startled by his own locks embarrassingly often, but it had the intended effect; he felt a little more civilian, a little less out of place, and it was thick enough that it usually stayed out of his face where he pushed it.

Again, there were only a few minutes of peace before the bickering started. Like mother, like daughter. Taking another sip of his tea, John made eye contact with Kalmiya. The redhead raised her eyes to heaven in fond exasperation and a soft smirk answered her.

Leaning back in his seat in the corner, John relaxed.

"Just a few more things," Dr. Halsey whispered. "We can't let them get into ONI's records." She tapped her pad once and then said to Kalmiya, "Begin Operation White Glove. Irradiate all computer memory crystal. Code file access Beta-Foxtrot-99874." Dr. Halsey closed her eyes as if she were concentrating, and she whispered, "Not all AIs have the fail-safe option, my dear Kalmiya... just the ones that matter." "I understand, Doctor." There was a pause, and the AI spoke again, her voice sad. "Voice and fingerprint accepted and verified. Fail-safe code verified. It has been... a pleasure working with you, Doctor Halsey." "The pleasure has been mine, Kalmiya."
