Whumptober Day 7 and 25: I’ve Got You/Carrying + Disorientation/Ringing Ears
[Kalun and the Team Masterlist]
[CW: needle and injection/sedation tw, help that’s...not so helpful, exhaustion, body giving out, ringing ears, disorientation, and the aftermath of going it by himself for far too long]
It was ironic, how when he couldn’t sleep, the world seemed to blur together into one black, endless night. By now he would have expected his night vision to be stronger, having dwelt in this hellish haze for so long now. How long? He couldn’t remember. Long enough.
He should have seen it coming, long before he hit the ground. He had just barely dodged a fist thrown his way, and the next approached in daunting slow-motion. This would be the one that felled him. His teammate had no idea
He felt the shockwave ripple through his jaw as Deya’s hit landed, and his legs went to jelly. He crashed to the ground like a great tree, noise echoing into the now silent training center, body absolutely unresponsive.
He didn’t fall unconscious though, he had too strong a grip on himself for that. He wouldn’t sleep. He couldn’t.
He couldn’t fend off the siren song of a deep sleep, if it came calling today. He couldn’t defend himself.
There’s never any chance to defend yourself
He lay on the cold floor, and watched his friends descend upon him, blurry shadows with vaguely familiar voices looming above him.
“Deya! You-oh god, he’s burning-”
“Help me get him up, we need-”
Their words swirled around him, confusing and murky, strange tones to ears that rang loudly. Hands were suddenly upon him, ice against his skin, sharp and uncomfortable. They gripped him tightly, too tightly, and he let out some sort of muted groan as he was heaved into the air
“I knew something was wrong, I told you guys-”
“Gentler, Matti, we don’t want to-”
He couldn’t follow the fragments of conversation any better than he could follow their movements as they carried him. They were trying to be careful, he thought in a dazed manner, but every move jostled him, irritating the bone deep ache that refused to leave him.
If he hadn’t known what true nightmares where, he would have said this was a waking one
He was relieved when finally he was deposited upon a smooth surface. A table, maybe? Whatever it was, it was freezing against his feverish skin. Prickles of discomfort wracked his body, and he opened his eyes a tiny bit, only to quickly close them against a piercing light angled down at him.
“This is going to be rough, it’s gonna be better to sedate-”
He understood those words, they cut through his haze like a hot knife. And suddenly, he began to struggle.
“Stop it Kay, you’re gonna hurt yourself!”
He thrashed, panic in his eyes, he needed them to understand, he couldn’t, no, please. “Please, please nnnnn,” he managed to groan, eyes flickering, trying to catch someone else’s, to make them understand
Instead, he was met with hesitant, but strong, hands clamping around his wrists and ankles. “Sorry Kal, but you need-”
“Please,” he cried out again, clear and desperate
The pinch of a needle in his arm left him sobbing in terrified heartbreak
“It’s alright, Kay, we’ve got you.”
And then darkness swallowed him whole
