nothing beats the feeling of walking where my ancestors once did. in the places they were born, and their remains are now spread. where our roots are, and will forever be. cemented, before and after my islands were ever colonies.

[2021, in my] MOTHERLAND
artist statement (senses poem)
see, hear, smell, taste, touch
Seeing my bikini takes me all the way back. To the water, which cradles the part of the island my mother is from.
I hear the waves, breaking on shore, and the jingling of my bangles—the smaller one I’ve had since I was a baby, and the engraved other that I got for Christmas later that year.
I smell many things when I think of that year; the freshness of the beach, and the unique fragrance produced by my use of the honey scented lotion used in my family home, fused with my all-time favorite citrusy and oriental perfume.
I taste many things, too; my mother’s best curry chicken, the starfish gummies from the shop by the main road, many many mangoes, seagrapes & saltwater.
And sometimes, I touch my passport as if it’s a portal, wishing to relive that summer again.

"lavi nivo" — a poem
jòdi a, an kamaoni. i moved into a much better & comfortable place today, and wrote this poem between the lil side quests on (and even after) the drive to my new apartment. so, enjoy!
something new,
a case of jugo [de] naranja (realmente de china).
two stalks of sugarcane, its shade sibling to my kaoban complexion.
a cocoa pod, its insides i’ve devoured on the ride down,
and the seeds that i’m saving to dry and grind
for my first ever made batch of té koko.
a bunch of glossy, green-rose wax apples.
and a yellow pomegranate da kina takté kon mwen yé.
something old,
my landlord’s childhood home, i presume,
upon walking into the living room..
i am elated to be giving it new life again.
and i look forward to all the memories i’ll be making, in this temporary home.
a home of my own, for now..
not too far from, and actually something so much like
my mother’s [childhood] own.
