PERSONALITY
Kamara is a natural born leader, full of passion and charisma. People are drawn to her; she radiates concern and altruism, unafraid to stand up and speak when she feels something must be said. She finds it natural and easy to communicate with others, and is truly interested in other people’s problems. She’s reliable, tolerant, and selfless.
Kamara can be overly idealistic, and takes any kind of criticism to heart. She also sometimes finds herself in other’s problems, and if she isn’t careful, can find herself spread too thin, and left unable to help anyone. Furthermore, if stuck between a rock and a hard place, Kamara can be stricken with paralysis, and unable to make the tough decision.
HISTORY
Kamara was born to a large family in the outskirts of Naivasha. Kamara grew up like any other girl in her place would; she has four younger siblings, two sisters and two brothers, and lived with her aunt and two cousins. Though their home was modest, they were a very happy family. She got a good education, including four years of secondary school, which she has been eternally grateful for.
Kamara’s happy world was shattered when her father fell ill from malaria, and died soon after. Her aunt passed away just a month later, and her mother was left caring for six children. Kamara was forced to grow up very quickly, becoming a second mother for her siblings and cousins. She took a job in the floriculture factory nearby, to help her mother financially. The work was hard; she laboured from morning till dusk, bent double over flowerbeds, breathing in pesticides. But as her siblings and cousins grew up healthy and happy, Kamara was certain it was worth it.
One ordinary day when she was twenty-six, she had a vision of an American man she’d never met before killing himself. The vision disturbed her greatly, and the headache which accompanied it went on for days. Kamara had become sensate, linked with six other people across the globe.
BIOGRAPHY
Kamara has now been sensate for four years. Her charming personality and genuine concern for the rest of her cluster has made her their unofficial leader. Her cluster was remarkably unlucky, and out of the six, only three survive. Her comrades helped Kamara “birth” the 3/12 cluster, using their skills to keep Kamara safe. Their reasons for birthing the 3/12 cluster are yet unknown.
Kamara’s heart has never been in her work at the flower factory. While people seem to like her, she has few friends. It has always been a means to an end. Her siblings and cousins moved out of the family home a few years ago; Kamara stays to look after her mother. Her life revolves around her family: Kamara used to dream of having a family of her own, but events in her life have led her to the decision that she did not want to have children. Her cluster is her family.
SKILLS
Persuasion - Kamara is extremely charming, and good at persuading people to do things.
Botanical Knowledge - Kamara has worked for twelve years at a flower farm. This has given her a relatively expansive knowledge of plants and botany.
SECRET
There are multiple reasons why Kamara does not want to have a family. She helped her mother raised her siblings and cousins, and knows how rewarding it would be to have her own family. That’s what she tells her extended family, anyway. The real reason is darker than that. When Kamara first joined the flower factory, she was a victim of a sexual assault by her manager. The experience was extremely traumatising. She had no choice but to stay at the factory, as her mother needed money so badly. In the end, the experience hardened her, and she no longer has any interest in romance. While she still displays a sunny face to her friends, she’s not sure she could ever trust a man again.
RELATIONSHIPS
Jamba Adoyo - Jamba in swahili means hero, and that’s what Kamara’s mother is. An incredibly strong woman, Kamara looks up to her mother. They’re more than mother and daughter, they’re best friends, confidants, sisters. They look out for each other, and both try to protect each other to the best of their abilities.
Nyota Omondi - Nyota is one of the youngest workers at the floriculture factory. Kamara and Nyota often find themselves chatting to each other very happily. Kamara is far from looking for another surrogate daughter, but she can’t help but feel strangely protective over Nyota. Nyota does not believe she needs anyone to take care of her - maybe that’s why Kamara is so drawn to her. For once, someone who doesn’t need Kamara to look after them.
