Kara Diaz comes from Kaikoura, New Zealand. She is 23 years old, female, and is a Bartender at a local pub. She is Sensate, and a member of the 3/12 cluster. Her faceclaim is Lindsey Morgan. She is The Artist.
Some negative qualities that Kara embodies are; bluntness, cynicism, sarcasm, pride and stubbornness. Most of which are due to her negative environment growing up. But Kara is loyal to those who she cares for, resilient, head-strong and self-reliant. Although her moral alignment is somewhat hazy, Kara generally acts out of good-will. Kara is usually quite distrustful of those whom she isnât close with, and has a difficult time opening up to people about her feelings. She also (despite how she may deny it) has abandonment issues due to her past with her parents. Because of this, she often worries about her brother dying, and her best friend leaving her. Her biggest fear is being alone for the rest of her life.
Kara grew up in a small two-bedroom flat in Auckland, under the negligent parenting of her single-mother Sonya; an aspiring actress who often viewed her children as a burden, and the only reason holding her back from the life sheâd always wanted. As a child, Kara often felt guilty about this, and in turn, obeyed her motherâs every command. This included taking care of her younger brother, while her mother was working, partying, or at an acting gig. Sheâd frequently come home at late hours, and often drunk. Â
At a young age, Kara began drawing and painting. She grew into the habit of finding any loose sheets of paper and a pencil or paintbrush whenever she felt sad or angry. The only way she could push back her emotions was if she concentrated hard enough, and channeled them into her hand. She found that it worked, but it meant that bottling up her feelings became routine. Speaking to people about how she felt had never come easily to her.
As a teenager, Kara took on a more rebellious and bitter mind-frame. She no longer felt self-reproach, and loathed her mother for her detachment toward herself and her younger brother. This attitude left an imprint on her school-life, which she struggled to enjoy, due to her rocky home-life and resentment towards authority figures. She began hanging out with the wrong crowd; students who prompted her into underage smoking and drinking at the age of fifteen. She also skipped class and frequently landed herself in detention; but she found people who accepted her, and understood where she came from. Her reckless behaviour eventually led her to petty theft; a crime that Kara never got caught for, and something she labeled as more of a talent, than a sin. Â
Although she was encouraged to drop out of school at sixteen, Kara persisted, and eventually graduated since she refused to end up like her mother. But by the time she turned twenty-one, her brother was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Her mother had left town after Hunter had turned eighteen, leaving Kara to deal with the cost of his treatment.
Kara now lives in Kaikoura, New Zealand, with her brother Hunter. She first came to Kaikoura on a school trip; falling in love with the small quaint town, roaring coast, and looming grey mountains. She figured it was the one place in the world where she felt the happiest in. Kara struggled to find a solution to their financial problems, especially with their motherâs disappearance. But although Hunter repeatedly tries to convince Kara into asking her for money, Kara refuses. Â
Kara had taken up night-shifts at the local pub as a bartender, even though the wages she would earn would hardly suffice to take care of the two of them, let alone Hunterâs treatment. Although one night during a shift, she overhears the TV broadcasting a news report on a wanted con-artist in France, whose crimes involved art forgery over stolen paintings. Kara began to teach herself the mechanisms of con-artistry. Â
Kara would often cheat in school, and copy paintings and various art-pieces, before passing them off as her own in exchange for full marks on her homework. She learned that she could use this talent to forge the works of more famous artists, and sell them off as their own for bigger profits. Her brother was completely against the idea at first, but Kara was too stubborn to consider his concerns. Â
She enlisted the help of an old school friend; Vic Morrison. The pair were notorious at school due to rumours of theft and pick-pocketing. He agreed to distribute her forged artwork to international buyers, in return for a slice out of their earned profit. He now flats with them in their newly bought hilltop apartment in Kaikoura. An extravagant upgrade to their once miniscule flat; a perk that had earned Hunterâs approval of their sordid crimes.
Petty theft and pick-pocketing.
Sonya Hendrix ( mother - alive ) ; Kara has a strained relationship with her mother. Growing up, Sonya aspired to move to America in hopes of becoming a successful actress; but as a single-mother, she made Kara feel guilty that she was holding her dreams back. She was often detached from her and her brotherâs lives, leaving Kara to take care of herself and her brother. Kara loathes Sonya after she abandoned Hunter two years ago; and proceeds to call her by her name, instead of mum. Sonya has made several attempts to contact her and Hunter, which Kara ignores.
Hunter Morgan ( brother - alive ) ; Kara feels extremely protective of her younger half-brother; at a young age Kara was forced to take care of him, due to their motherâs negligence, and would do anything to ensure his happiness and well-being. The main reason for her forgery crimes, is to pay for the best medical treatment she can find in hopes of curing his leukemia.Â
Gabriel Diaz ( father - fate unknown ) ; Kara has no memory of her father, as he left Sonya after he found out about the pregnancy. From what her mother has told Kara, her father was a budding musician who promised to take Sonya to America to pursue her acting career. She has had no further communication with him, nor is she interested in seeking him out. Â
Vic Morrison ( best friend - alive ) ; Vic and Kara met in detention in their first year of high school. Together they consider themselves as partners-in-crime, while their endeavours grew from petty mall thefts to elaborate con-artist forgery. Kara produces the forged art-pieces, whereas Vic distributes them.
MÄui ( pet dog - alive ) ; named after a MÄori Demi-God, MÄui was a stray found wandering outside their house. A few months later, Kara and the German Shepherd are almost inseparable.
