SDF Macross Ep. 7: Bye Bye Mars

So we open with the Zentraedi surveying the abandoned Mars base while Breetai and Exedore discuss the reinforcements he’s ordered... Exedore is horrified to learn he has called up Kamujin Kravshera. THAT’S MY BOYYYYY!! Who apparently destroyed a fuckload of their own ships while drunk one time. And also wiped out two divisions of friendlies in another fight (although he also did kill every last enemy; you win some you lose some)... While they are discussing this Kamujin’s ship’s defold, super way too close to Breetai’s, and the noise Exedore makes is HILARIOUS. It turns out that K had a bet going with his second in command as to how many they’d hit, with the winner getting the other’s “booze ration”. So apparently the Zentraedi get liquor rations in this; that’s a thing. Nice.

“Hieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”

Apparently Kamujin has been sidelined for 6 ‘taarns,’ whatever those are, for his naughty behaviour. So, way to make a good first impression, you beautiful piece of garbage. Breetai has a plan for him to lay an ambush for the Macross.

Also, in the English version he was called ‘Khyron the Backstabber’ and I’m sorry but ‘Kamujin the Ally-killer’ just doesn’t have quite the same ring. And he had this great affected British accent, that I miss too. 

Blah blah Minmay invites Rick to her birthday party. Who cares. He feels special but later it turns out she invited THE WHOLE GOD DAMN MILITARY or something. 

The Macross receives a signal from Mars Salla base, that’s supposed to be abandoned after it was attacked during the Unification wars (I think?). Misa’s boyfriend (?) Riber was apparently stationed there so she has some Feels. Anyway the Captain decides that they can probably find some supplies and stuff at Salla so they go to check it out. Misa wants to check out the base just in case there are survivors, to which Global agrees. 

Meanwhile Khyron and his troops are hiding out in a ravine. They have planted a bunch of gravity mines underground to trap the battle fortress once it’s in position. It’s actually a pretty good plan and Kamujin manages to be patient and wait for them to move closer but one of his guys jumps the gun and gives away their position a teensy bit too early. The mines are all set though and the Macross can’t get away as Kamujin attacks, oh noes. 

And look how fine Kamujin is looking:

He came out here to attack people and he’s honestly having such a good time right now

Anyway the Macross crew figure out if they overload the base’s underground reactor they can destroy the mines, so they get Lisa to set that off. While she is on her way out she gets trapped between two emergency bulkheads... Right in front of Riber’s room, what a crazy random happenstance. Wait, Riber? 

Or is it.. 

LIVER??! Ok... Misa gets caught in her feels and won’t leave Riber’s room, forcing Hikaru to have to come and rescue her, which she protests vigorously. Doesn’t anyone in this show enjoy being alive??

The reactor blows, freeing the SDF and destroying most of the remaining Zentraedi fighters. Khyron is equal parts pissed because he hates to lose and intrigued at the prospect of an actual challenge... 

And this is the best-behaved he’ll be for the whole rest of the series! :v

Next episode is: THE LONGEST BIRTHDAY. I guess Minmay’s celebrating on the Sunday of the time change?

SDF Macross Ep. 8: The Longest Birthday

Any scene with Minmay feels like the longest anything so

We open with Breetai and Exedore contemplating the humans’ progress toward their planet, wondering if they have let them get too close. But nah, it’s just going to be eveb more awesome when they defeat them within sight of their home, so it’s all good. The only thing Breetai is worried about is... Kamujin!? Like dude YOU hired him. And he was being good last episode. I mean, he isn’t going to be now but that’s beside the point :v.

Yeah he is totally planning to pretend to do a training flight and instead attack the Battle fortress. This will become a pattern, lol.

Yeah he will. Also, seeing the Zentraedi use slang like this amuses me a great deal :3c

So Rick is getting a medal and promoted, I can only imagine because they are running out of guys. Roy puts him in charge of Hayao something and Maximillian Jenius (subtle foreshadowing, so subtle). Rick has to get to Minmay’s party and ends up dragging them along, although Hayao would apparently prefer to go to a strip club... Lisa realizes standards aren’t what they used to be when she hears about Rick’s promotion.

I mean, she’s not wrong

Anyway Minmay is salty that Rick didn’t bring her a present. She starts flirting with Max, who, to be fair, is cuter and less of a dolt. Hilariously the mayor is at this party and WILL NOT stop calling Rick ‘Lil’ Hikaru.’ xD

On the bridge Lisa realizes her radar is being jammed just as Khyron sends his first guys to draw out the defenders.

Such drama. I stan. :3

So the guys get called into action and Minmay is a brat about them having to leave, predictably.

Kamujin’s ‘decoy’ force draws off the main valkyries, and then his main force attacks. Macross is getting its butt kicked although Max is doing great. Almost like he’s... some kind of... geinus... Hayao sucks at everything but being loud. There is a pretty sweet standoff between Kamujin and Lil’ Hikaru where they each cut the hands off each other’s mechs.

Breetai is watching and complaining about ‘typical Kamujin.’ Again, YOU HIRED HIM. He decides that even though Kamujin is WINNING, he can’t let him just do whatever he wants (this will again be a pattern...) and orders them recalled, threatening to send Kamujin ‘back to where they came from’ if he does not retreat. I remember that in the English version this was not an order/threat but like a remote override that recalled Khyron’s ships against his his will. EIther way Kamujin is pissed.

After the battle Rick goes over to Minmay’s. He still doesn’t have a present so he gives her his medal. She can’t tell one shiny object from another so she loves it. Mission accomplished I guess. He is so happy he runs all the way home. Oh and apparently it’s now been 8 months since the Macross left, which I geuss does make Rick’s promotion slightly more believable. I guess.

Next episode is MISS MACROSS!
