Surprisingly, the interior of the place doesn’t smell like a pig den. It’s also oddly quiet, but that is to be expected from a guardroom. Nobume doesn’t spend too much energy in those thoughts; she’s invested in counting the number of loose threads of her kimono and pretending she does not notice the heavy footsteps.
“Missus.”
Nobume raises her head, expression unreadable.
“Vice-admiral Assbag,” she greets him.
Abuto frowns. That greeting felt like a bitch-slap. Kamui did mention that she was more effective with words than with her sword or her gun, to which he didn’t pay attention because “hormones are making him exaggerate”. Yet here they are; him trying to amend the frail relationship with his definitively-not-daughter-in-law and her calling him names.
“You know I had nothing to do with this unfortunate situation you are in.”
She holds his gaze.
“Well, of course not. Last I checked, doormats were inanimate objects.”
