A little thought on Andrew being the Rook: Andrew represents protection and home for Neil and Kevin, and to me, there is no other piece that represents 'home' more than the Rook
As for Kevin: I like to think that the Queen's best trait is adaptability, and that’s exactly what makes her so lethal—just like Kevin when he had to switch hands to keep playing
I´ve seen a few " i don´t know if the knight is the best for niel" well let me explain about why I shose the kinght for niel (and give you other option )
in my opinion, the kinght is a high-risk piece in chess (like niel jeje). and it´s the only piece that can jump over enemies, enter in their lines, take dow an opponent and return. this is just like niel, who entered in the nest kwoing the risks, survived, and return to the foxes.
on the other hand, we had the pawn:
it´s a simple piece, identical to other pawn, much like niel in the fist book (tray to hide his true identity ) but the interesting about this peices is if it reaches at the end of the chessboard, it can transforn to knight, queen, rock or bishop.
