That starwars rebels manga written by mitsuru aoki is just EXTREMELY Kanezra coded
You cant deny it once you see it im keeping my eyes on them
Or is rebels just really kanezra heavy in the first place? Idk?
What got you into DP?
Short answer? Vlad Masters.
Long answer?
Back in December 2022, I was minding my own beeswax on a small Star Wars: Rebels Discord server dedicated to a ship between these two characters:
(L-R) Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus
For some absolutely random reason, I stumbled across a piece of fanart by Stove, a cute badger cereal mini comic featuring Good Uncle Vlad helping Danny clean up his parents' lab. You've probably seen it.
Anyway, I was floored by how much this white-haired guy looked like my other fave, Kanan Jarrus. As I was babbling about this new character on the server, a friend chimed in and was like, "You know there's a ship between him and Danny right?"
Cue my Surprised Pikachu face.
Let me tell you, anon, if I had a nickel for every time I immediately became infatuated with an Older Tall Lean Handsome Man With Ponytail, Goatee, Superpowers, Dad Vibes, and A Close Relationship With A 14-Year Old Boy Who Has The Same Powers As Him (Also They Are Technically The Only Two Of Their Kind)... well, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
My current ship (Kanezra) was already deemed "problematic" because of the age gap, and upon learning that Pompep had an even bigger age gap, I girded my loins and prepared to ride into battle.
But instead of a battleground, I found a thriving community of fans with relatively little drama (anyone coming from the SW fandom will agree), and I made myself another sideblog, started posting, and the rest is history.
kanezra thoughts tonite my liege? spare kanezra thoughts? 👀
look man, I try real hard to have Deep and Coherent Thoughts™ about the things I enjoy but can I be so fr rn? I just love daddy issues. I see a boy in need of a father, I see a father figure, I want them to fuck about it
ironically, kanezra is one of those rare cases where I’m more interested in the daddy’s issues than the daddy issues, though, which I think is just bc Kanan is a really interesting character. like the guilt and desire to be A Real Jedi despite not really following their teachings into adulthood is just. wild. and I think in regards to Ezra this might be part of his reluctance to teach him at first. Kanan did the whole no-attachments thing and he was a worse Jedi for it than when he’s zipping around the galaxy with his rag-tag-found-family, and I think Kanan’s aware of that
s1-s2 deals on and off with him feeling like he isn’t a proper Jedi, but it’s only really discussed in that he was still a padawan when Order 66 happened. the fact that he pretty obviously needs connections with others tho? that’s gotta fuel that particular anxiety, right? I think that’s 100% influencing things between Kanan and Ezra below the surface, this idea that Kanan isn’t a traditional Jedi by any means, and he feels unworthy to train Ezra because of it. how can he pass on the teachings of his master, and her master, and the entire order, when he can’t even practise what he’s supposed to teach? how can he help steer Ezra from the dark side when he can’t even warn him away from The Danger of Attachments without revealing exactly how much of a hypocrite he is?
in a kanezra scenario, I think this only gets worse bc, not only does Kanan have to struggle (internally. man is not talking this one out) with feeling like a hypocrite, but the focus of that hypocrisy is now the very person he has to teach. it’s one thing to live with the Ghost crew and call them his family and make jokes with Hera about “the kids”, but if he were actively pining for his own padawan, the only person (to his knowledge) that he can pass the Jedi culture onto? 👀😋
okay, so apparently I did have more to say about this than I thought lmao. thank you, Kanan, for your repressed alcoholic years for inspiring this post
