The defining tragedy of North Korea – the pathological personality cult built around the Kim family – is vividly illustrated in this state television report on the recent unveiling of huge Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il statues in Kanggye, Jagang province. Every aspect of this inane ceremony begs ridicule – the enormous expense of designing, producing, transporting and erecting the statues; the countless labor hours wasted by requiring thousands of people to attend the event; and the ass-kissing local officials expressing for the 10 zillionth time the same deluded lies about the Kims’ inglorious rule.
