Sometimes the earth shines at the sun.
The Kankakee Mallow grows on only one island in one state in one country in the world.
Langham Island in Illinois is the home to the world’s only wild population of Iliamna remota, commonly known as the Kankakee Mallow.Let’s celebrate Illinois’ diverse flora and fauna by declaring the Kankakee Mallow the official flower of Illinois! Sign this petition to show your support for this campaign and urge Illinois lawmakers to co-sponser Bill HB4338!
Support endemic species and their habitats! Help us change the Illinois state flower from the violet to the Kankakee Mallow (Iliamna remota)!
For more on the campaign, check out the video linked above, and Robb’s call-to-action at Habitat2030.org.

Campaigning for CHANGE! Don’t be Shallow - Vote for Mallow The Brain Scoop
It’s an election year and I’m totally burnt out about presidential campaign things- I know we all are. But one thing I’m NOT burnt out about... is supporting unique habitats and biodiversity.
I first learned about the Kankakee Mallow (Iliamna remota) from Robb Telfer because of a campaign he had initiated to formally change the state flower of Illinois from the violet (which 3 other states have, and is not really unique to our area), to the Kankakee Mallow - a flower which only has one native, intact habitat left in the entire state (on an island in the middle of a river.... check out our previous video, we got to go see it blooming!). So far, the bill has got two sponsors in the House (Kate Cloonen and Eddie Lee Jackson, Sr.) It has LEGS!
If you want to help us change the state flower of Illinois to the Kankakee Mallow, which would elevate its status and teach more people about unique habitats, you can write to your representative (find the list here) and ask them to support the bill!
Sample language:
Dear _____,
I'm a constituent in your district and I'm writing to encourage your support for House Bill HB4338, amending the State Designations Act to change the current state flower from the native violet to the Kankakee Mallow. This would allow us to celebrate the unique biodiversity of Illinois, and raise much-needed awareness about a protected habitat. Thank you!
Sincerely, ____.
If you aren’t in Illinois, that’s okay! I still want to hear about your favorite local flora and fauna. Do you have a favorite state symbol? or is there one you’d like to see changed?
in 2014, the Illinois Native Plant Society organized a field trip to Langham Island to visit the only known native habitat of Iliamna remota, the Kankakee mallow. the flower wasn’t there tho, because invasive species be invading. after the trip, Trevor Edmonson, Stephen Packard, Linda Masters and dozens of other volunteers formed Friends of Langham Island and dedicated themselves to restoring the 20-acre island enough to make it hospitable for the mallow to return - which included rolling burning logs over the ground where the mallow was last known to grow to stimulate its particular seed germination preference. it worked, and in 2015 almost 1000 mallows were counted, but no flowers yet for the young plants. This year, the blooms have returned and Emily Graslie’s The Brain Scoop made this sweet video showing how great it is to have them back. You can see all the seed pods on the plants, making new seeds for new mallows so the plant won’t be lost again on the island for a long time. At least while me and the other Friends are still alive.
See that flower? It's the Kankakee Mallow (Iliamna remota), and it's one of the rarest plants in the world. Its species is only found on a single, 700m-long island in the middle of the Kankakee River here in Illinois. Today, I got to be one of the first people in over a decade to see it in bloom. New video coming soon! (at Kankakee River State Park Illinois)
And here's a perk if you fund that campaign for Langham Island. I'll mail you a hand printed poster for the mallow designed by Liz Kozik. Here's that link again. https://www.gofundme.com/langhamislandfund
