A beautiful day for lupins!
Wildflowers and meadow grasses at Kankakee Sands on a blustery Saturday.
Rachel Bradshaw, 2020.
Another day, another new smell. This time, bison.
The bison were enjoying a dust wallow right at the fence line yesterday. I love these big beefy buddies so much.
(Don't worry about proximity- there's a double layer of containment between us! I'm not nearly as close as it seems.)
i love baby bison season so much
That fence isn't to keep him in. It's to keep humans out, because he's the size of a small SUV and could easily destroy you.
And he's not even the big one.
Visited the bison today and the young bulls were strung along the fence line. I was alone, and it was so silent except for their surprisingly light footsteps and the heavy chuff of their breath as they chewed. One young bull came close to me, almost right to the electric fence that keeps humans contained. He wasn't agitated, just kind of curious about my good camera. I think he probably knew how I wasn't possibly a threat- I'm so small and he's so large. He ended up walking with me a ways, all the way back to the edge of the gravel where I had parked. At no point was I remotely unaware of the massive wildness of him- he was close enough that I could feel how hot his breath was. It was incredible.
saw some birds today
