Gale Sayers, Elusive Hall of Fame Running Back, Is Dead at 77

Though his career was cut short by knee injuries, he was widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in National Football League history.

This hurts. The Kansas Comet was one of my all-time favourites. He was as good a person as he was unbelievable as a player. 

His running style caused the creation the phrase ‘dead leg’; he could accelerate instantly in another direction; and it’s said he never ran out of bounds to avoid a hit.

If you ever want a good cry, find the movie “Brian’s Song”. 

Enjoy (American) football while you can, for the damage it causes players’ brains will eventually bring about its demise.

#OTD 10/17/1972 President Nixon and Gale E. Sayers, former professional football player for the Chicago Bears and one of the President's appointees to the National Advisory Council for Drug Abuse Prevention. Mr. Sayers was given the nickname the "Kansas Comet" during his college years at the University of Kansas. He was a member of the Chicago Bears for seven seasons and NFL Rookie of the Year in 1965. Sayer's close friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo, who died of cancer at the age of 26, was the basis for his autobiographical book "I am Third." Any football fans out there?

Well, I got to meet and talk with Gale Sayers. He tried to tell me he wasn't famous at all and I had to laugh at that. I told him he had to be joking and he gave me a great smile.
