Admittedly, I’m far too young to have any recollection of Gale Sayers’ legendary football career. But every article and video I’ve ever read or watched about the guy has always described him as one of the most gentlemanly players to ever set foot on the gridiron. Billy Dee Williams portrayed him to perfection in the television film “Brian’s Song”. And he put a school with perhaps the richest of histories on the hardwood (KU) on the football map like few players before him or since. God gained an angel today. I met Gale Sayers in 1980. He was the athletic director of my college. As I reached for the door of a building out walks Gale Sayers. I stood there with my jaw dropped, trying to think of something to say to this legend. I said “hello Mr. Sayers” and he sensed that I was nervous so he asked me some questions about being a freshman in college.
