 The professor blinks, eyebrows raising in a double take as he sets his clipboard down and swivels in his chair to get a better look at  the familiar face. 

“My, has it been so long?” He asks, smiling fondly. 

“You’ve grown so much since the last time I’ve seen you. How are you, Cayden?”

Amberly leaves post-it notes around the ranch for Cayden to find at random points, like on the door handle of his truck or on his tool belt. 

At one point, she wrote a small note in the fog on the mirror in the bathroom after showering for him to find eventually. They don’t say anything important, just small notes of encouragement. Little things like ”Great job today!”, “I hope you have a great day!”, “I’m proud of you!”, or “Knock’em dead!” 

She knows he doesn’t need it, but she likes to think they’re little reminders that she cares when she can’t find time between her studies to see him.

         those poor clefairy all the way from mt.moon. on such a long scary journey not knowing where they were going after their home had been destroyed. being the gym leader of ballonlea, she was considered the strongest person in the town so it was only natural that she oversaw what happened in the forest. 

         they were all arriving today. hopefully they would find it to their liking. it was safe. a much taller man stood near the entrance of the forest, the much shorter woman rushing by his side. he was big enough for even a NOCTOWL to be sitting on his shoulder. 

    “ bonjour. “ bijou greeted warmly, smile wide. “ I take it you are a ranger, no ? “ her accent was heavy kalossian. “ I can’t believe you brought all of these clefairy all this way. that’s very kind of you. “ her voice was gentle, motioning for him to follow while they stepped further into the dark forest that was mystically lit by the glowing mushrooms. “ you think the kanto clefairy will like it here ? “ 

     looking around, lost in thought for a moment. “ oh ! “ a giggle following. how embarrassing. she didn’t introduce herself, too excited about the pokemon. “ I am bijou, ballonlea’s gym leader. “ but perhaps he might know her from elsewhere. still, it was polite.  she had come to tour in kanto many times. her favourite was getting to visit fuschia. so many pokemon being well cared for there...

“.... no. ” if you want to get technical about it, she just remembered her own name. “ okay, maybe— but more importantly: dove? ”

a sigh barely wins it’s way through pursed lips, as the breeder continues to fiddle slender fingers over the tablet in hand. it’s a dour look she wears— unbecoming from her, and unusual, but inevitable given the circumstances. it distracts her so much so that she doesn’t notice the other’s approach until his feet practically march into sight of her down-cast gaze, and she snaps up with a blink. the smile Opal applies is wane, despite her efforts.

“ Ranger! Bonne journée... ah, forgive me, is there something I can help you with? ”

There’s a free ice cream coupon mixed in with other mail in the post box. Specifically for a strawberry delight that looks rather delicious. On the back, on a sticky note, “I’m allergic. Enjoy.” Is scribbled.

 Tracey is perplexed about the signed coupon in the mailbox when he brings the mail to the Professor during lunch time, but Sam recognizes the handwriting upon seeing it and plucks the tiny paper from the pile. 

How thoughtful to think of him for this kind gesture, no matter how small it seems. 

Excited about the Strawberry Delight, Sam smiles, and pencils in a phone call in his planner to thank Cayden for the gift - and perhaps invite him over to share a dessert they can both enjoy.
