Pok Pok chef/owner Andy Ricker to open curry-on-rice restaurant in former Kappaya Japanese Restaurant space
Andy Ricker is expanding his restaurant mini-empire yet again. Ricker, the chef/owner of Southeast Portland's Pok Pok, its across the street neighbor the Whiskey Soda Lounge, Chinatown's Ping, and Northeast Portland's Pok Pok Noi, has "acquired the space that currently is occupied by Kappaya Restaurant," Ricker wrote in an email. The Kappaya space, at 3384 S.E. Division St., is just two blocks east of the original Pok Pok. Ricker plans to take over the lease Oct. 1, then reopen at an as-yet undetermined time as a casual restaurant selling mostly curry-on-rice dishes. Ricker provided more details about the menu: "We will be opening a new casual restaurant there based on something called raan khao kaeng in Thai: basically a curry-on-rice house featuring dishes such as Kaeng Som (spicy southern Thai style), Kaeng Naw Mai Dong, Kaeng Kiaw Waan Kai, Kaeng Om Neua, Kaeng Kati Tap Neua and maybe even some standards such as Kaeng Phet Pet Yaang, using our duck oven to roast the ducks. Also, a dedicated Khanom Jiin station offering 3 or 4 different sauces to top the noodles with." The new restaurant's name has not been announced. Ricker also reconfirmed that he is looking to open a Pok Pok outpost in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

Kappaya is my local sushi joint. They make great food at great prices and until this was announced, they employed one of my best friends. And then Pok Pok made this move and all the employees were given 2 weeks notice.
I like what Pok Pok has done at both their main location and across the street at Whiskey Soda Lounge. Their tamarind whiskey sour and mussels make my mouth water at the mere mention and now... well, I'm a touch saddened by the whole affair.
