The lute is such a beautiful instrument!
Here are some beautiful, shockingly “modern”-sounding works by Johann Kapsberger.
The lute is a descendant of the Middle Eastern oud, showing the transition of musical development from the Eastern world to the Western world.
Another tune by Giovanni Kapsberger?! Aha - A quick search shows that he was a “German-Italian virtuoso performer and composer of the early Baroque period. A prolific and highly original composer, Kapsberger is chiefly remembered today for his lute and theorbo (chitarrone) music, which was seminal in the development of these as solo instruments.” So - he’s the man, in theorbo circles.
PS - What a lovely performance! :-D
Is it just me or are Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in C major, and Kapsberger’s Toccata Arpeggiata all really similar? I don’t have enough knowledge of music to be able to explain it, but to my ear they share some kind of underlying structure.
