2021's A Year of Anime
Part 4
Barefoot Gen
This movie was brutal in depicting the bombing of Hiroshima and the aftermath of the disaster. It was based on the manga and the experiences were based on the author’s, Keiji Nakzawa, life as he lived in Hiroshima. I know the animation isn’t as unique, but for the 80s they managed to show some graphic and haunting imagery. It does have a little hope towards the end, but it doesn’t change the fact that the effects of Hiroshima was serious.
Redline
Yo! This movie was freaking dope as hell! The animation was incredible and went full-drive to go extreme. I think the story is average, and the dub cast did a good job. All you need to know is that watching Redline is an absolute ride that everyone needs to get on.
Kyousougiga
I watched this show because of the director, Rie Matsumoto, who directed the first season of Blood Blockade Battlefront. The animation is super creative and wild with its style & colors. I like the story, sub cast, and music. It’s a short anime, so you can finish it in a day. It’s really good!
Colorful
Life is hard and surviving an attempt changes your perspective of one’s life. This movie has decent animation and a good sub cast. However, the movie depicts suicide in a way I didn’t think any anime would ever do. It’s not perfect, but I admire how real and isolating it can be. It’s a solid movie that you should see.
Napping Princess
This movie has a larger than life concept of a girl who dreams of an alternate universe that parallels to her own life. It is animated nicely with a good music score. I think the story could have been done better, but the visuals sold me.
Kimi ni Todoke
I adore the show for its animation and showing a pure, loving couple who admire each other for their personalities. I admit some storylines could have been shorten, so we could have seen more of Sawako and Shota’s relationship bloom. The sub cast were good, the music is wonderful, and the heart of the show really makes the show special. I wish we could have another season, but I’m still glad the show made it official that Sawako and Shota are a couple.
Nermia Daikon Brothers
I see why this show is one of a kind because there’s not a lot of musical comedy anime out there. It is wacky and entertaining to watch. It does some problems and crude humor, and the sub & dub cast were good. It’s wild, but at least the songs are memorable.
