Commentary (English)
Superkvalitagrableca-ekscialirinda is a technically valid Esperanto compound word that preserves the original meter and approximates about half of the original sound.
The original meaning of “super-”, “-istic”, and “-ocious” are approximated with Esperanto morphemes (super-, -eca, -inda). This approach of approximating the sound while adding recognizable morphemes is similar to, for example, the Dutch translation (superkwalikwantiviaextraquasiotisch) and the Swedish translation (superhärlifraggellistighäxlikhalledosen), but many translations that keep most of the original word still change the “-ocious” ending to a 2-syllable ending common for adjectives in the target language, if such an ending exists (e.g. -oso in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese; -etisch in German).
Here is the morpheme breakdown:
super-: (prefix) super- (both the “above” and “exceeding” senses)
kvalit(o): quality
agrabl(a): agreeable, pleasant
-ec(o): (suffix) [adjective X → “the state of being X”]
-a: (suffix) [marks an adjective]
eksci(i) (ek- + scii): to realize; to find out
alir(i) (al + iri): to go towards; to approach; (technology) to access
-ind/a: (suffix) [verb X → “worthy of X-ing; deserving to be X-ed”]
So therefore, while it’s meant to be a nonsense word, a possible meaning of superkvalitagrableca-ekscialirinda is “worthy of going towards when discovered, in relation to being agreeable with exceedingly good quality”.

Not cool, to paint a queen in your “villainry”,
Not cool, to defy me and my vibrancy,
I’m so let down by you, it made me laugh,
And even if you flip your judgement on its head, it’s too late
For real, thought you’d be giving justice with grace,
For real, if you kept up the forgiveness pace,
He’d have no reason to die, poor little thing,
It’s not my fault, from the start was just frivolity
Right, right, you worker bees beneath,
Hey, with this now don’t you see,
Haven’t I taught you enough with my gentle sting?
Ah, right, right, a hopeless kid indeed,
But you got no pass from me,
All that pain, on your tongue, bittersweet honey
That “I’m so sorry!” you say can’t be heard at aaaaall~
That’s totally gross, did that strike as true?
That “I’m so sorry!” you say can’t be heard at aaaaall~
You can’t read the room so I got no room for you
Not cool, so irksome that the villain? can breathe,
Not cool, things like justice? dying makes me seethe,
You’re a killer, same as me, oh-so-scary, eek,
That was folly, yet doing naught but as we please
Look at me, am I all-knowing, supreme? “Yes” or “Indeed” I will bear chanting,
Mama and Papa love their cute little queen, playing friends softly, no plays pass me now grieve,
I’m the strong and weakness I consume, wouldn’t eat another bee, today’s again carefree,
Below, fading like so, so low, bleh, zip your mouth, never gave you pause to speak
Right, right, you worker bees beneath,
Hey, with this now don’t you see,
Haven’t I taught you enough with my gentle sting?
Ah, right, right, a hopeless kid indeed,
But you got no pass from me,
All that pain, on your tongue, bittersweet honey
That “I’m so sorry!” you say can’t be heard at aaaaall~
Tears may fall but punishment will never end,
That “I’m so sorry!” you say can’t be heard at aaaaall~
And really
I’ll never end this,
That hurt and pain and shame I’ll return without a single break,
Guess that I'm a bully after all,
What that child felt as I saw him dying,
You don’t know more than the surface you saw
I’ve had enough,
If making myself the villain can get you to give an apology that he
Can’t accept then that pain is fine by me!
You’re the reason that my friend is dead and,
That’s something I can never forgive!
All this, now know, it’s not his fault.

In a classroom lays a snail that slithers helplessly
Clicking tongues pass the time, a phony MELODY
Eat green peppers, it still doesn’t matter, bitter makes me blind
What a find! Attack! The bullied bully back
Cool or cute, everybody has chances for true love to grow
I answer yes to every question asked, even if it’s a no
The pain, the pain, the pain is far too much to bear
But I can’t show I really care
With a “thank you” on, a “good day” at dawn
And a “sorry” that's too much for you
They will say ‘so long', then a snap and gone, it's phased one afternoon
Whether middle-aged, or with teenage angst, can we dance like RA-TA-TA?
Just a soul, any soul, someone save the human race!
Growing irate, trash to take all left at the GRAND PRIX
Stuck inside the mind of a child, the IRONY
Hunks of meat for all of us to eat, a fun experiment
It came and went for when a love invades again
Bird or beast, everybody has chances for SIRLOIN cooked well
And like a SPY, I wander aimlessly with a SECRET I can’t tell
I’m scared, I’m scared, I’m scared of this path that I’ve chose
So my eyes are staying closed
With an “I’m glad” on, an “I’m sad” at dawn
And a “Gotcha!” that’s too much for you
They will say ‘we see’, with the law decreed, it’s all we ever knew
Say, SATOU-SAN, and SUZUKI-SAN, can we sing like LA LA LA?
Just a soul, any soul, when can someone give me a name?
If I up and died for that HAPPY ENDING
Then the odd one out would disappear into the unknown
Dyed in crimson color, a bloody PASSPORT
Stall any longer, the moment has come
Closer, closer, the closest becomes…
With an “I’m glad” on, an “I’m sad” at dawn
And a “See ya!” that’s too much for me
They will say ‘so long’, then a signal gone, it’s broken, bits unseen
Say, TANAKA-SAN, and TAKAHASHI-SAN, can we laugh like HA-HA-HA?
Just a soul, any soul, any soul, any soul, any soul!
With a “thank you” on, a “good day” at dawn
And a “sorry” that's too much for you
They will say ‘so long', then a snap and gone, it's phased one afternoon
Whether theory bold, or a lit gas stove, can we dance like RA-TA-TA?
Just a soul, any soul, someone save the human race!

I was walking in the dark
No direction, no spark
But one day, somehow, I met you
And everything, in life lit, up anew
Every step feels like a dream
You and I, the perfect team
Hand in hand, we move ahead
And now I, won’t lose my way, again
We run this shiny path
No looking back, just you and I
Each time, we’ll shine, even at the world’s end
With you, I’m never lost
This path is my one goal
Let’s glow, let’s go
We’re on our shiny path
Used to chase gold and fame
Empty wins, a losing game
Didn’t know on that endless road
What real treasures the world could hold
Just a labor in vain
No map, had an empty page
Lost in the dark alone, I didn’t know, what way I should go
But you showed me something new
Every light was leading to you
And now, I won’t roam, or lose my way
You are all that I need, to be, okay
We run this shiny path
No looking back, just you and I
Each time, we’ll shine, even at the world’s end
With you, I’m never lost
This path is my one goal
Let’s glow, let’s go
We’re on our shiny path
I don’t need a map, I just need your light
Even with no stars, know we’ll be alright
If I get led astray, if the path one day fades
You’re my way, you’re my truth
We run this shiny path
No looking back, just you and I
Each time, we’ll shine, even at the world’s end
With you, I’m never lost
Now I’ve found the, real treasure, so
Let’s glow, let’s go
We’re on our shiny path
Hah, hah~

When the world is unkind like we'd never have thought
And words cut like thorns into you who never felt it true
Seeing through your mask I felt like the least I could do
Was to pledge
My heart and soul to you
With my bluntness and the words I chose entirely too fast
I dirtied your poor heart with wounds I didn't mean to last
And the blazing red that sorely stings my eyes as I stare
Remains sewn onto my face unaware
I'm sorry I couldn't be there
Hug you tight, as you start to cry
And break the boundary inside
You were so lonely, but I really loved you the whole time
Your heart held in my hands, hurt too much by this world as I cling for dear life
All the tears fall down from hidden pain, when the dam burst it was far too much to take
Holding on, as I try and try to stop the bleeding
You looked up at me, and still you were forcing smiling
I hate that it couldn't be helped, but I understand now a little more
All that time I wanted you to know that you could always cry in front of me °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・
I Can Do Miracles from Pathologic the Musical - Indonesian Version/Cover/Translation/Translyrics
Original/English Title: I Can Do Miracles
Indonesian Title: Secercah Keajaiban (A Glimmer of Miracles)
English Lyrics, Music: @pathologic-the-musical
Indonesian Lyrics, Vocals, Audio Editing: @thanathicca
Version: 4 (final)
Takutmu, Grace, kuhapuskan,
Genggam tanganku, jangan lepaskan
Walau jiwa dan raga taruhannya
Tetapi, kala Bumi,
beri wahyu 'tuk kita berdua,
Kita harus percaya.
Secercah keajaiban, di tanganku,
Dalam kegelapan,
Musuh kan kuterjang,
Hanya aku yang mampu.
Secercah keajaiban, lihatlah aku,
Di penghujung waktu
Pilihanku satu
Kutuliskan naskahku!

Recording Notes
Our laboratory-technicians who enjoy writing translated lyrics are finally back here, and boy, did they smash it with Version 4! Anyway, we rushed to record this even though a cold is happening, because it's so rare that we have the privacy and free time to do so.
This is probably the final version of this song, because like heck we're singing this again with our 2-note vocal range! At least we can practice audio editing to correct the pitch of the voice. xD
Definitely super proud of the lyrics... <3

The Song
Legend

Indonesian translation
Literal English translation
My notes
Lyrics
I don't know this place.
How strange is our fate?
But at least I'm glad
I'm awake.
Di mana aku?
Apa takdirku?
Namun bahagia diriku
Where am I?
What is my fate?
Yet I am happy
Took a few retries to get the translation fitting. A lot of the previous versions had her just saying she woke up from a grave, but strangely, she's happy about it.
The earth has a song,
and the dead sing along.
Don't you hear it too, Grace?
They're singing to you
Bumi bernyanyi
Dengan yang mati
Lagu untukmu, Grace, memecah sunyi
The Earth sings
With the dead
A song for you, Grace, breaking the silence
In Version 3, I didn't mention Grace’s name at all… it was “Dengarkan alunan lagu untukmu” (“Listen to this melody [which is] for you”). But I changed it. Same as the bridge that mentions her.
But there, down in the ground,
there is no way to get up once you're down.
Unless you have a way
to outsmart Death's plagues.
Tapi di alam baka
Tak mungkin hidup lagi selama
Belum membalas muslihat Sang Wabah
But in the afterlife
I can't come back to life as long as
[I] haven't returned the Plague's trickery
“Sang Wabah” basically personifies the Plague. “Sang” and “Si” are used for personification and nicknames. “Si Tikus” would be “The Rat”. “Si Aneh” would be “The Weird One” or “The Freak”. “Sang Siluman” would be “The Changeling”.
“Returning the Plague's trickery” is basically the Changeling Route, no?
Well, I have just such a pal
just such a clever preposterous gal
like Orpheus cried out, I too
will pull back the shroud!
The seeds of my plan
Will sprout/bloom like kamboja [flowers]
The entire town is fragrant with safety
This translation feels more like localization because I straight up don't know how to fit the Orpheus line. Trust me, I tried xD
“Semerbak” means (usually pleasant) scents that spreads through the air.
“Selamat” and “sentosa” basically mean the same thing, so the repetition adds to its potency. It means to be safe from harm, illness, or disaster. However, “sentosa” is more formal and rarely used.
(This has nothing to do with the musical, but both words are used in birthday songs. :p)
Kamboja is a famous flower from Indonesia, it symbolizes eternity… and death. Kamboja tree is commonly planted on graveyards to mask the scent of death and add color to the place, so it has mystical/horror connotations.
(They're my favourite flowers.)
I can do miracles,
if you just let me!
There is strength in these hands
that I pull from the land;
Try and stop me if you can.
Secercah keajaiban ada di tanganku
Kekuatan ini
Datang dari Bumi
Coba hentikan aku!
A glimmer of miracles exist in my hands
This power
Comes from the Earth
Try to stop me [if you can]
“Secercah” basically means “a little light”. A glimmer. A spark, maybe. “Secercah harapan” can be translated as “a glimmer of hope” or “a spark of hope”. What do you think?
This, to me, also contrasts the Bachelor's lyrics, “Rona darahmu / Pelita untuk jiwa yang kekal” (“The fire in your blood is my light towards an immortal soul”). Because “rona” is a bright light, like a flame, or a bright colour, like a blush on someone's face.
I can do miracles,
test me, you'll see!
Though the graveyard is dark,
I can feel in my heart
there's a place here meant for me.
Secercah keajaiban, uji aku
Gelap lahad ini, namun dalam hati
'Ku tahu takdirku di sini
A glimmer of miracles, test me
Though this burial hole is dark, but in my heart
I know my fate is here
Indonesian standardized spelling is wildly different from colloquial because I know real people spell it “lahat” instead of “lahad”. \*facepalm*
This town is so vast,
it fills the whole sky.
It all seems so new,
but I feel I'm passing by.
Kota membentang di cakrawala
Terasa baru, tetapi tak apa
[This] town is so vast, it fills the horizon
It feels new, but it's alright
“Cakrawala” is a fun word. Probably up there as one of my favorites :D
In Version 3, I translated “I feel I'm passing by” as “I moved fast through it”. Which is not really what happens in the game. So I decided to translate it as “I'm alright” in Version 4.
There's something
unnerving;
something's wrong.
I'm afraid
that this day
won't last long.
Takutku tiada terperi
Hari ini ‘kan lekas terlewati
My fear is indescribable,
[That] today will pass by quickly
So… the literal translation for this would be “Ada yang janggal (or, ada yang menakutkan) / yang salah / ‘Ku takut / hari ini takkan bertahan lama”... Fitting these lines was difficult. I tried “Kejanggalan ini menakutkanku / Karena kita di penghujung waktu”, (This strangeness scares me / because we're at the end of time)... Or “Rasa takutku tiada terperi / Karena kita di penghujung hari” (My fear is indescribable / because we're at the end of the day)... it all feels weird cause she's not at the end of the day, at all.
Then, I tried “Firasat buruk ini mengganjalku / Hari ini 'kan menaklukkanku”, which means “I feel a strange foreboding / Today will conquer me”. These lines instead refer to Burakh (“I feel a strange foreboding, I sense something foul I can't find”) and Thanatologist (“Penakluk Kematian” - “Conqueror Of Death”) respectively, because you can only play Clara's routes after you've played Artemy's and/or Daniil's. It also shows that she has a “bad feeling” about the Bachelor and the Haruspex, thinking that their solutions are wrong. But I felt bad for not giving Clara lyrics that fully stand on their own, so I changed it again.
I smell fire, brimstone and twyre,
a warning in the air.
But with the power in my hands
I'll keep you safe…
Di mata batinku lautan api
Pintaan kota ini
Jadi biar
Kuulurkan tanganku
In my heart's eye, a sea of fire
The pleading of this town
So let me
Give them my hand…
Shout out to the smelling, brimstone, and twyre that didn't make it to this song.
“Mata batin” literally means “eye of the heart”. It can also be used to refer to a “third eye” or “sixth sense” - spiritual sight, clairvoyance, etc.
When I was a kid, the elementary school rumor mill often included which kids had a “mata batin”, and which ones had theirs closed. Maybe I'm just old.
(I know some of those kids asked their parents to have them closed by priests or something, because they were getting traumatized by visions, ghosts, etc. If Clara was a kid in the same era as me, I think she wouldn't get hers closed, though.)
Also... "hand"... is it a helping hand? A healing hand? Or a deadly one?
I can do miracles!
I can; I will.
I'll fight for our share-
I'll make the world fair.
Try and stop me if you dare.
Secercah keajaiban, juru s’lamatmu,
'Ku 'kan buat dunia
Adil dan berderma
Coba hentikan aku!
A glimmer of miracles, your savior
I will make the world
Fair and charitable
Try and stop me [if you can]
“Juru Selamat” is an epithet for Jesus Christ. And also “charitable”... I thought some Christianity wouldn't be out of place, considering Clara is a saint (allegedly).
I can do miracles,
leave it to me!
I don't care what they say,
I will rescue the day!
I will find the perfect way.
Secercah keajaiban, yang sempurna!
Ku takkan acuhkan seribu hujatan
'Ku 'kan s'lamatkan semua.
A glimmer of miracles, one that is perfect
I'll ignore a thousand insults
I'll save all
“Semua” means “all”, it's not very specific, unless you add an object to it. So it could be “everyone”. It could be “everything”. It could be “every” whatever. What and who is the Changeling saving, truly?
Little Grace, come take my hand;
there's no reason to fear what I've planned.
Only sometimes, there are prices to be paid.
But when the earth sends us a sign,
there's no fear, there's no doubt in my mind;
ours is the only way.
Takutmu, Grace, kuhapuskan,
Genggam tanganku, jangan lepaskan
Walau jiwa dan raga taruhannya
Tetapi, kala Bumi,
beri wahyu 'tuk kita berdua,
Kita harus percaya.
Your fear, Grace, I'll erase them
Hold my hand, don't let go
Even if we have to pay with [our] body and soul
But when the Earth
Sends a vision to the two of us
We must believe in it
“Wahyu” is a vision from God (the monotheistic one, yes), specifically the message He bestows only to His prophets.
It kind of goes back to the Bachelor's “Powers that Be” being translated into “Yang Kuasa” (“The Almighty”)... even though, for him, it doesn't necessarily refer to a divine being.
I can do miracles.
I can, you see.
There's a beast in the dark
I'll strike down with this mark;
I think no one can but me.
Secercah keajaiban, di tanganku,
Dalam kegelapan,
Musuh kan kuterjang,
Hanya aku yang mampu.
A glimmer of miracles, are in my hands
In the darkness,
The enemy, I'll attack
Only I am capable
The “my mark” thing is lost in translation :(
I can do miracles,
just watch me try.
we've no choice, we've no time;
I will write my own lines.
Watch me work my own design.
Secercah keajaiban, lihatlah aku,
Di penghujung waktu
Pilihanku satu
Kutuliskan naskahku!
A glimmer of miracles, watch me
At the end of time
I have one choice
I'll write my own script
…still haven't found a punny enough translation for “the Lines”, even now… anyway!
“Penghujung”, a formal way to say the end of something, is not really used in normal everyday conversation. I've mostly heard it used by stage MCs or something as the phrase “penghujung acara” (“the end of the show/event”), which is why I'm putting it in the Changeling's song ;)
There it is! The fourth iteration of the Changeling's theme from Pathologic: The Musical, “I Can Do Miracles”. I hope you enjoy it - feel free to let me know your thoughts!
Not sure what I'll do next. I tried translating “The Plague Descends” but the Indonesian language has so many syllables, the translation is awkward so far. Maybe it can be refined someday… I also saved “Twyrine Dreams”, so maybe I can go with that instead. Who knows? Not me! Take care, everyone! :D
how do you go about translating songs into english? what aspects do you prioritise when making the lyrics? i love your songs!
🌱EEK! Ohmygosh! Thank you so much!! I made a video on this a long time ago (~16 min mark), I go through in a lot of detail of my thought process, and resources if that's helpful! But it is pretty old!!
Maybe some things to keep in mind when translating that really helps me!
Understanding the message: I'm very loose when it comes to translating; I really believe in adaptation over doing line by line direct translating, and I feel okay straying from the source if it will more sense in english, and stays true for the character. I'll also swap order of lines, or where information shows up in a song if it will help with flow?? It's up to your personal preference! Some people really dislike it when you go too far from the original!
Picking out key details/phrases right away: Pick out essential terms you notice right away, then working around them. Sometimes songs will just have something that you can tell right away is iconic to the song, or a image or detail that feels too important to reword (I think like "break-up rituals" in mahiru's song, or "sorry spells" in Muu's). It actually gives you a lot of structure to pick out what is non-negotiable, and what's important right away, then start building around it. It's also fun to sneak in the titles or characters references in, but only if it's not too corny I think!
Character songs - Motifs: For story driven songs, and sometimes for songs in general, I think it makes a translation really cohesive and glues things together if you have elements that pop up over and over again that relate to the character/theme. In Alien Stage for example, I found that Ivan's symbols really centered around not being seen, and 'darkness', 'shadow', so things like a black hole which absorbs all light, the color black, dark bruises, were all things I thought about when translating for black sorrow. If that makes sense!
Thinking about the language: I noticed while doing Milgram (Japanese) vs Alien stage (Korean), is that Japanese will tend to give you a lot of syllables and space to say something, so you actually end up adding some information or adjectives in english to fill it out. Whereas Korean gets a lot of information out in very few syllables, so translating becomes more so as concentrating to paring down to just the most important details.
You'll feel good flow when recording: What really helps me on flow, is thinking about how words are stressed on certain syllables, and how we speak in english is basically never with perfect grammar. Using contractions, slang/expressions are all natural sounding, and what helps me a lot is more so having a few alternate translations to pick from, or a good idea of what I want there, and then when I record, whatever comes most easily as I say it is what I refine and keep??
Hopefully those tips are helpful!! I'm sure everyone's process is very different! So honestly just diving in and finding out what works for you over time and practice is the way! I believe in you little sprout!
