During the Axis occupation of Greece in WWII, seemingly ordinary people crossed into the heroic sphere. Lela Karagianni was one of them. A simple home-maker and mother of seven children, Lela’s only responsibility for much of her adult life was to tend to her family’s needs.
But from the moment the Nazis invaded and occupied Athens, she became a critical member of the organised resistance movement— even creating her own cell, which she code-named Bouboulina.
It was these actions which led to Lela’s untimely death by firing squad on September 8, 1944. She was only 46 years old.
To mark the occasion of her death, we take a look back at her incredible life.
Ladybirds from Kos
Photo series (including a very informative text in Greek) by Kos photographer Sophia Karagianni.
I was not born on the island, but due to my mother’s background I moved here 15 years ago. I am a teacher at the high school and live in the center of Kos Town. I am an amateur photographer and almost every Sunday go on hikes with my group. Between 30 and 70 of us get together and we walk around Kos and neighboring islands.
Kos lends itself to walks, hikes and excursions with bicycles. Via the 13km bike path one can begin to discover its beaches. A nice and short, 3km route suitable for beginners is from the town’s marina to the nearby wetland.
Go to Plaka Forest, towards Kefalos, for a picnic. The peacocks that live here are very friendly – they are certain to approach you and, in their own way, communicate with you. An easy walking route is the stone-paved path that begins at Antimachia Castle and ends in Kardamena. Combine your walk with a visit to the castle. Towards the end of the route you will come to Lovemade, a gorgeous cafe that makes a delicious brunch with pancakes and many sweets.

Ro or Rho (Greek: Ρω) is a small Greek island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea near Kastellorizo, close to the Turkish coast. It is part of the municipality of Megísti (Kastellorizo), in the South Aegean region.
Together with other islets in the surrounding region, Ro was the object of a sovereignty dispute in the 1920s between Turkey andItaly, which at the time was in possession of Kastellorizo and the Dodecanese islands. The dispute was solved in a 1932 treaty, which assigned Ro to the Italian side. It finally came under Greek sovereignty in 1947, together with the other former Italian possessions in the Aegean.
Ro has been uninhabited for most of history, except for the one Greek woman who made it famous, Despina Achladioti. Every day, Achladioti, also known as the Lady of Ro, would fly a Greek flag, clearly visible from Turkish soil, over the island, until her death in 1982.[citation needed]
A small Greek military unit is now based on the island, with the primary duty of continuing the tradition of raising the flag, set by the “Lady of Ro”, Despoina Achladioti. According to the 2011 census the island has no permanent residents. (Text from Wikipedia).
- this picture series by Kos photographer Sophia Karagianni tells more about the island and the fascinating story of the Lady of Ro. As well as a number of great pictures.
Terrible, me olvidé de ponerlo acá.
