What's wrong with the orphanages in karinsport or nytheris at large for there to be an orphan thieves guild? Why aren't they there?
Nytheris in general actually has pretty good orphanages, Anon. The problem is Karinsport specifically. MC isn't aware of just how tumultuous the city was right before she was born. Long explination of Karinsport/Nytherian history below the cut.
First of all, I should say that Karinsport is actually one of the major cities in the empire, it's the port that has the most trade with the Koltric Isles, and is the capital of its povince, which was in a pronvice the rebelled in the border wars, one of the first recovered. iIt was still getting back on it's feet when there was a huge scandal concerning the governor around the same time that the elven district of the city rebelled. In the wake of the scandal, a mob sacked the governor's mansion, and the without a governor to command them, the imperial guard in the province went rogue under their current province head, and the entire area was falling apart. With the guard rogue, all of the various gangs tried to take over.
Emperor Konstantin was commanding his armies in person on the southern border (while Karisport is on the western border), and couldn't get there to deal with the problem, so he sent Gulin and Embercrest (the steward) to fix it.
So it that giant mess, the orphanages fell into disrepair, and didn't have people running them. It's kind of a taboo subject, so no one talks about it, but Oren, Violet, and Alina were old enough to understand what was happening, Sam wasn't in the city at the time, and everyone else was too young to realize the situation. To them, the orphanages are dumps where no one cares about them, but in reality the people running them are trying their best to repair the damage afer the city nearby destroyed itself.
