so i censored the location info which defeats the purpose of spreading info about a rally because i do not think tumblr is the target audience to share a local event, BUT i was actually flyering for a rally yesterday and wearing a jollibee hoodie, which is the hoodie i wear for my dave cosplay LMAO so i had to throw this on when i got back to my room the swagapino dave strider is authentic guys
but yes, anyways, so! some quick bg info for those not in the know, but if you’ve been keeping up with filipino news you might’ve heard stuff about flood control projects, more specifically GHOST flood control projects! what’s basically happening is that the philippines is very disaster-prone, like there was a typhoon just super recently that did a lot of damage! while you can’t necessarily predict/prevent natural disasters from happening (well. global warming. whole other thing to talk about), you CAN have infrastructure in place to mitigate the damage! so, given that typhoons and floods happen so often in the philippines, you’d expect its infrastructure to prevent flooding so that people don’t have to deal with that, right?
WELL, uh, there is literally nothing! flooding happens so often that filipinos are used to it! like bros will just continue to eat dinner while half submerged in flood water! and people die in the typhoons and floods, people die from dirty ass flood water guys! filipino politicians keep PROMISING to build better infrastructure to prevent flooding, there’s a whole list of flood control projects promised, and a SHIT TON of money allocated for them gathered from taxpayer money! yet when you actually visit where the projects are meant to be built, on the days that they’re meant to be finished, you go and see…nothing!
so! if the projects aren’t fucking there, where is the money going? oh yeah! right into the pockets of these filipino politicians and their kids! this whole issue got brought to light when people on tiktok started talking about nepo babies, how filipino politicians are using tax dollars to gift their children fancy cars and vacations to europe. also, current president bongbong marcos claims he’s just as mad about the corruption, but bold words to say when he’s literally the biggest nepo baby, the son of philippine dictator ferdinand marcos. also you are literally the president if you wanted to do something about the corruption you would literally have done it a long time ago
we call this shady ass behavior from politicians corruption, but the wider systemic issue is called bureaucrat capitalism. if you’re american and have ever heard the term “running government like a business” when referring to the trump administration, that’s basically the gist of what it means! if capitalism is in which the means of ownership are privately owned and the goal is making as much profit and money as possible, bureaucrat capitalism is that on the government level. it’s using your government position to, instead of actually properly governing the people to make their lives better, to instead just make money.
so, yes! that’s why you’re seeing these rallies and protests across south/southeast right now, from nepal to indonesia and yes the philippines too! bureaucrat capitalism and corrupt politicians are freaking Everywhere, and we deserve people who represent us!
