Long ass yap because Ive been thinking about Roberts family all day and its technically a head canon because since its never hard confirmed. Also probably the most lukewarm take ever.
TW Parental Abuse/Neglect
TLDR; Robbie wasn't outright a bad person, but he sure as hell was a bad parent. And Robert definitely internalized a lot of things from it. Even more
TLDR; fuck Robert Robertson the First, starter of the generational curse.
Robbie was definetly a shitty parent but i dont think he was ever out right a physically abusive or intentionally evil person. All of the bruises Robert got from training to be Mecha Man was always from himself or his father pushing him too far, or just the intensity of the training outpacing what his growing body could handle. And the occasional accident during training or when he took his anger out on the suit.
But all he ever got during training is the same his father got. Tough love, a stern voice telling him to get up, a pep talk and a hug after training before his dad left again. Sure Robbie wanted to be there to help Robert when he was sore and but the only time he let himself be away from the job was to prep Robert for his time in the suit. Be it Robbie retiring or dying.
Even special occasions or big days for Robert were interrupted by Robbie leaving for work in the middle of it. Birthdays, Holidays, and any other milestone a home schooled Superhero trainee could have. It was nice knowing that Robbie cared enough to decorate the house, order a cake and pizza and plan things, but it still hurt that plans always fell through because Mecha Man came first. Mecha Man always came first, and Robert was always second fiddle to Mecha Man.
Even once his father died, and he was the one to pilot the suit, Robert wasn't as important as Mecha Man. That feeling is the Robertson generational curse.
I like this read of the dynamic a lot because it makes the relationship harder to navigate for Robert. He cant be all in on hate for how fucked his dad was, but theres still a lot of resentment from the neglect. Its not like he could just ask his dad to let people die to spend a day with him but thats all he really wanted from his dad too.
It probably also ate Robbie up inside too, knowing he wanted to do better than his own father but failed miserably. Watching his son deflate every time he had to leave for a long time, and the pain of realizing Robert didn't react anymore, he just expected him to leave like he always did. He didn't ask for anything anymore. That's when it hurt the most.
He'd always have the chance to make it up to Robert. Once Robbie was too old to be in the suit he'd focus fully on his son in every chance his heir wasn't in the suit. But that was wishful thinking that never came true. And Robbie died regretting every day he chose the suit over his son, and Robert got left with the baggage of Robbie's choices.
Tumblr does this thing where it just picks a tag at random and assumes Im interested.
2 weeks ago it really thought I'd like seeing a lot of Vin Diseal, a few months back it was F1 and today it snapped and decided to just ass blast me with weight gain fetish blogs.
