anyway I've decided something about the Kashithes' reckoning of time
the purposes of everyday activities it's kept in a way more similar to medieval Europe, based around fixed points, but the fixed points are dawn/dusk/midday/midnight, and they continue to be fixed points all throughout the year, meaning that rather than the number of hours in the day and night changing, the "hour" shrinks
and the reason WHY is because the Kashithes' species, the Tekym, are crepuscular and sleep twice a day and can't see very well at all either in the darkest part of the of night or the very brightest part of day so they have always had to pay attention to both of those points very carefully, so there's a motivation to keep the clock tied to the sun in a way that's immediately easy to intuit from the system itself
on the other hand, since the Kashithes as a culture have always been quite resistant to ways of life involving a high degree of centralization, there's not a strong pressure to produce a customary time unit that doesn't change wherever you go and whenever you are in the year (aided by the fact that on Tek they were generally concentrated within a smallish geographical area, so major differences in distance from the equator were not a factor)
they probably do have a more fixed time measurement systems for some things, like scientific or mechanical stuff, but I think it's kind of like kelvins where you don't use it if you don't need it, and I suspect it's borrowed from one of the other nearby cultures they've been influenced by that have instead tended towards a centralized social structure with high industrialization and therefore have had a need for those fixed-length timekeeping systems
There's no denying this makes most sense as a system if they're not too far from the equator, and I've also tended to think of Tek as much more sparsely inhabited than Earth, which combined has caused me to decide that the equatorial zone is the only readily habitable area on the planet. Not that it needs to be for them to be from the equator, but it would certainly line up with the geopolitical situation as I've envisioned it.
