The Galactive Civil War may have ended years earlier, but that by no means meant that the fighting was done. New Republic citizens, or former resistance members that thought they were 'liberating' planets still inhabited by Imperial remnants saw their fair share of skirmishes. Eriadu was one of them, and Kassim's parents remained until the planet left Imperial control.
They left the planet amidst one such skirmish, and Kassim, barely a few months old, got caught in the crossfire of one blast and other. Parts of his leg were burned away to nothingness, and most of it was covered in serious injuries. His parents chose to amputate it. (He didn't get access to a proper prosthetic until he joined the growing First Order).
His family fled the system, and sought out refuge in the Unknown Regions when the First Order started to rise. They needed children, and for his parents, it was easier to give him up and hope he'd have a better life. The First Order needed children-- they needed officers, soldiers, engineers... Kassim was saved from the stormtrooper program because of the missing leg. Instead, even with the lack of notable family connections, he was put in the officer program. He barely remembers his parents, he was five when they gave him up.
The first year was easy enough, he was smart, and the access to a prosthetic made it all the easier, but he wasn't passionate about it. There was though, however small in comparison to the other factions, a medical core though. He transferred from the primary officer path, and finished the rest of the academy training.
he was originally stationed on one of the other stardestroyers, but once construction began on Starkiller Base, he was transferred to the Finalizer. Most of his patients were unfortunate victims of Kylo Ren's use of the force. When Starkiller was destroyed, Kassim survived, and stayed on the Finalizer.
He's loyal to the Order, they saved his life-- they gave him an education, a prosthesis, and the closest thing he can remember to a home.The Republic forced his parents out of their home, and destroyed his leg, but even he can see, and understand that what they're fighting for, isn't necessarily wrong. Above all things though, Kassim is a doctor, and he takes it seriously.

QUIRKS :: Kassim has quarters of his own, they’re nice even especially because he doesn’t share them with anyone, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t fall asleep at his desk in the medical centre more than not.
