For the Silva scene, I always interpreted it as Silva making Killua promise never to betray his friends simply because he knew Killua would. He knew of Illumi's needle, and how that would cause Killua to run away and leave his friends behind. And when that would happen, Killua would come back home. And Silva was right--Killua would have come back home after losing to Shoot if he hadn't pulled out the needle soon after.
