Drumming with Memory Care (and overcoming my fear)
A month ago at the WRAMTA conference, I happened to attend Kat Fulton's session on drumming with older adults. I couldn't shut up about how cool it was, and my supervisor said, "Hey Emilie, why don't *you* try drumming with *our* memory care group?"
Me : "What no I can't do that no too scary I'm just a student waaaah!"
Supervisor : "Girl, get it together."
Me : "*Breathes deeply* Okay."
I was really nervous approaching this. What if they don't get it? What if they don't *like* it? I hardly slept the night before. Could I, a lowly student, successfully facilitate a drum circle with memory care patients?
...
YES!
And as far as my approach goes, I pretty much directly ripped off Kat's technique (which she demonstrates here, totally worth a look!) and man! Those guys were drumming, taking solos, and interacting with each other on a level I hadn't ever seen before. Two clients initiated sharing a drum, and one was assisting the other and helping entrain to the beat. It was hands down one of the best music therapy experiences I've had so far.
So I guess my point is, if you're afraid of something... DO IT!
