I'm American, so I guess this is an evergreen post. But felt inspired this weekend because *gestures vaguely* ... anyway, fuck ICE.
For the 2025 leg of the Unreal Unearth tour, Hozier had screens above the stage listing a bunch of protest songs during "Nina Cried Power," fitting since his song is a tribute to other protest songs. I also noticed the screens stopped when vocalist Amanda Brown came up to sing Mavis Staples' verse, which I appreciated.
If you're looking for protest songs by Hozier, you don't have to look far. There are political themes across all of his albums, but I think "Jackboot Jump" and "Nobody's Soldier" are my personal favorites. Maybe because they sound the angriest.
🥺
“Can we please leave politics out of metal, punk-“
NO!
these genres LITERALLY formed from resisting the mainstream culture. They’re existence is quite literally all about taking a stance against the very politics that hurt marginalized people.
…. But you don’t wanna hear it. We can tell by THE WAY YOU TUNE IT OUT!!!
😤
My name is JER, and this is the second single off my record 💔Death of the Heart💔 a record about living through our current political climate, resisting the inhumanity that’s normalized by our society, and learning to process these feelings in a healthy way and move forward holding compassion in our hearts. Because compassion and understanding is one of the most punk things you can do in a society fueled by hatred and moral apathy.
Death of the heart is now streaming everywhere, and you can buy it on vinyl or CD if that’s your thing 🙂↕️
STREAM "I'D LIKE TO BE BETTER"
Phil Ochs and Pete Seeger at The Spring Mobilization Against the War in New York City, April 15 1967
Bruce Springsteen says "I don't worry" about losing fans over slamming Trump and "blowback is just part of it. I’m ready for all that." “My job is very simple: I do what I want to do, I say what I want to say and then people get to say what they want to say about it. Those are the rules of my game. That’s fine with me. I don’t worry about if you’re going to lose this part of your audience. I’ve always had a feeling about the position we play culturally, and I’m still deeply committed to that idea of the band. The blowback is just part of it. I’m ready for all that.” “The tour is going to be political and very topical about what’s going on in the country. Minneapolis and St. Paul, that was the place I wanted to begin it, and I wanted to end it in Washington.” (via Minnesota Star Tribune).
Bruce Springsteen says he doesn't care about losing fans who take issue with him regularly slamming Donald Trump.
