When we fist see Emilias backstory: "Oh jeez, so all this was basically caused by an abusive father? Oh no, a mutes gonna kill her brother or something, I just know it. That's why she hates mutes." After we see Emilias backstory: "DAMN NEVER MIND GUESS SHES JUST AN EVIL BITCH THEN!!"
Dude when we started the flashback I was so worried this was gonna be “pwease excuse these crimes the bad guy did, she had a very bad childhood UwU” case. But I’m glad the crew handled it like they did. They did not even give it a chance to be framed that way and for that I am so thankful.
Yes, Emilia’s dad was a huge dickbag and yea, we all can see why Emilia was striving for validation, but Liam being a counterpoint to that shows that the cycle of abuse can be broken if you just open your mind up to it. They were two kids in the same upbringing, Emilia had no excuse to continue being an asshole when she saw good mute/human relations right in front of her. Also had no excuse to commit 2nd degree murder holy shit.
hc that zane and liam were best bros growing up and zane sided with emilia so strongly because of his grief over liam’s death. but once he started to realize that mutes were alright and they werent the dangerous killers that he always believed, he was finally able to move forward and away from emilia’s influence.
because, even if a mute HAD killed liam, a mute also stopped by to talk with him everyday and gave him food he preferred to eat and was genuinely nice to him. he’s most definitely seen what kind of terrible things humans have done, can do, want to do.
but he clearly doesn’t see all humans as bad. meeting label (and kipo) helped him realize not all mutes are bad either. it wasnt fair of him to blame all mutes on liam’s death. it was time to forgive and go on with his life. he’s sure, at least, that liam would have wanted that.
