Here’s why Everything Sucks! is so important:
I found Everything Sucks! by accident. It was a Netflix recommendation I clicked on because I had nothing better to do (my plan initially was to rewatch the office) and it turned into so much more.
Imagine randomly clicking on a show only to find out the main character was a canon lesbian. The main character. Not a side character or a prop, but the main character.
I have been watching tv for almost two decades now and I don’t remember ever finding a show with LGBT *MAIN* characters in it without searching for it.
I certainly don’t ever remember seeing a teenager a real teenager (not an adult playing a teenager) as a lesbian on TV outside of Degrassi which has always stood out from the “norm”.
The representation this show provides makes me want to cry because I can’t imagine how validating it would’ve been for fourteen year old me to see myself on TV. I can’t imagine what it would have been like in elementary or middle school to be able to stumble on representation without searching it out.
Shows like Everything Sucks! are important because even if it just reaches a few people, it shows them that it’s normal and it’s okay to know you’re gay early on (most of us do). It’s not an oversexualized “adult only” activity. It’s human and IT’S OKAY.
Thank you @netflix and @everythingsuckstv for representing us so well.
