For the book ask: D, G, M :)
[book asks]
D: What book do you hate that most others love? To be fair, I’ve never actually finished it, but I just can’t get into Donna Tartt’s The Secret History even though a lot of friends (not only friends in academia, too) really like it. I don’t know, it just reminds me of Christopher Rice’s A Density of Souls, which had potential but turned out to be fairly terrible; the characters all seem so pretentious, I can’t stand it. I’d be willing to give it another chance, but I think I’d have to be in the right frame of mind to put up with it. (But if you’re looking for a novel that I think does the “campus novel” thing really well--though it’s not, ultimately, the crux of the plot--read Tana French’s The Likeness. One of my favourite books ever.)
I also … am going to alienate people here, probably, and I’m sorry, but while I really enjoy the story/atmosphere/experience of Harry Potter I just don’t think the writing itself is all that stellar. It has its good moments but I’ve read YA with much more compelling sentences. I’m sorry. I feel like no one is supposed to say anything against HP but it’s how I feel.
G: What’s your favorite reading spot? I have a really comfortable reading chair in my apartment that I picked up for $35 at a used furniture store next to my favourite diner in the city. It reclines, and also rocks. I also read a lot in my desk chair in my apartment (salvaged from my dad’s office when he was remodeling), with my feet up on the windowsill.
M: Favorite classic? Arghhh I can’t choose just one, there are too many sub-categories within “classics.” From Thomas Hardy, my favourite is Jude the Obscure. From George Eliot, The Mill on the Floss. From Shakespeare, two-way tie between Macbeth and The Tempest. From Sir Walter Scott, Ivanhoe. From Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse. From Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities. That’s probably enough to be going on with.
Thanks for asking!
thank you for this blog; i've been meaning to say this for a while - seeing Carey on my dash lights up the whole day. you're amazing! ⭐️
Awww thanks so much for saying that! It’s hard to keep it up-to-date because Carey is so rarely in the news but we do what we can. -Em
i thought this hellhole of a site is a goner but i've found your blog and it's refreshing. keep at it mate ⭐️
the trick is being on here for too many years, and as such... not giving a fuck ✌️
Do you have a favorite bird? I like the ones that are really puffy, small, perfectly round and seem a bit angry at the world. I wonder which ones are your faves
Those kinds of birds are A+, I appreciate them very much. I love when my chickens become small, angry puffs (generally only happens if you disturb them at night, or if it’s snowing and you haven’t properly cleared a path for them through the snow to their food; sometimes happens for no apparent reason).
My favourite bird is probably a piping plover – small, puffy, round, but with long legs. For some reason, I really like when birds fast-walk and piping plovers do that to the max. Plus their call is really cute, and I love watching them on the beach.
I also really love wrens of all kinds, and owls (specifically the saw-whet owl because, come on, small round puff, that’s literally all it is).
cleaning up and taking shower is a great way to reduce anxiety, it's cool that you do it 🌿 as for the questions - what songs have been on your mind lately? or some endless, eternal classics you'd rec? thank you :3
Yeah, my apartment now smells of pine-sol and my shower smells of peppermint and my hair is clean and I’m wearing a t-shirt I got when I was in Japan eight years ago, so it’s an improvement. Still tense, but hoping it fades soon. Music recs:
Last night I was listening to Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians” on repeat while working; it’s almost an hour long, and though some of my friends don’t get it, for me listening to minimalism or phase music when I’m trying to focus helps. It has to be the right tone though, and this piece hits that tone for me.
Today while cleaning I put on Joni Mitchell’s Song to a Seagull album, which has as its last track one of my favourite songs ever, “Cactus Tree.” Her voice is that perfect blend of wistful and soothing and while I love basically all her albums, this one (and Blue) is such a good sound. This is one of those “eternal classics” for me; Joni Mitchell is one of my favourite artists.
Yesterday morning I was listening to Dar Williams’s “Iowa (Traveling III)” (from The Mortal City, an ok album on the whole but with some really great moments). I also really love her song “When I Was a Boy.”
This past week in general I’ve been listening to Day6 a lot; some favourites of theirs are “Congratulations,” “Letting Go,” and “Blood.” Also sometimes I put on their second album-launch studio rehearsal in the background while I’m cooking or doing laundry or something.
Thanks for messaging me! Hope you have a good Friday.
Ok ok ok so who's hotter: Pine or Urban? 👀

Alright so I saw the call for h/c prompts. And I literally can't walk past - so “Breathe, Just Breathe” for Zira and Crowley? Maybe Crowley has a panic attack or something akin to that? Thank you so much!!
Thank you!!
“Azira- Zira--” Crowley’s hands were clawing onto Aziraphale’s arms, but unable to keep the hold. Aziraphale caught the flailing hand and pressed a fast kiss to the palm, and kept hold of it, as his other hand came to the demon’s face, trying to wake him up from whatever spell he was in.
“Please, dear, listen to me,” Aziraphale begged him, his voice shaking, as the demon in his arms was gasping for breath, eyes unseeing and dillated in panic.
It hasn’t happened often, but sometimes Crowley’s nightmare would be so vivid than even awake he would still be caught in it. This was one of those times, Aziraphale waking to Crowley whimpering in his sleep, and when his eyes opened he still couldn’t see he was fine, in their home, safe.
“I am here,” he says as clearly as he can, forcing down calm and drawing Crowley close, tucking his head so that one ear would be pressed against his heart. He knew humans advised against such practices as the other person might get violent, but Aziraphale was plenty strong to hold the demon close and keep him from possibly hurting somebody (be it himself, or Aziraphale). “We are safe at home, there’s no fire, we are alright--”
He kept steady mantra of reassurences until Crowley’s body loosened all at once, and Aziraphale knew he was back. Still he didn’t let go of him, pressed his lips on the crown of Crowley’s head, listening to mumbled apologies and offering all the comfort Crowley needed
Ask me H/C prompts and a fandom and I’ll write a ficlet!
