Luz Noceda (The Owl House)
I'm starting to develop a new Misericorde theory: Katherine has an evil twin. Or is an evil twin depending on how you look at it.
It's all about the portrait. Why is there a portrait that looks exactly like Katherine, but which she insists is not her, and is missing her mole? It's because it's not her portrait, but her twin sister, who was married to the lord of Linbarrow. For clarity, I'll call Katherine "Katherine" and this hypothetical twin "The Widow".
After the widow's husband accidentally fell neck first onto his sword like four or five times, Katherine agreed to take the fall for it. The Widow disappeared (or took Katherine's identity too) while Katherine agreed to take vows under her sister's identity. Katherine and the Widow looked close enough alike that most people would be fooled, if it wasn't for the painting. When the artist came back to finish the portrait Katherine drove him off with Catherine's help, afraid he'd notice that she wasn't her sister.
There's a lot of possibilities here. Maybe Katherine did kill her brother in law, to help her sister escape. Or she was in a bad enough situation herself that being exiled to a monastery seemed like a better option. What I am sure of is the Widow is involved in Catherine's murder. I don't know how, I don't know why, but Tatiana is insistent that the mole on the portrait is the key to the whole crime.
ignore the poor quality but here's my (subject to change) impressions of the misericorde cast after volume 1
