Broken Eyes excerpt by Katie Dougherty
I had come to the conclusion early on in my adolescence that teenagers have a love-hate relationship with the month of August. While it has arguably the best weather for outdoor, summery things like swimming and exploring the world, it's also the last month of summer break. It's like a switch goes off in our brain the first day of August, which makes us realize we wasted most of our vacation doing things that could have easily been done on weekends during the school year. It's not our fault really. After nine months of homework, teachers, and drama, we deserve a few months of lazing around before we do it all over again. But when August rolls around, we're like sharks that smell blood. We go into some crazed state to make memories and stories that will last us through another mundane year of school.
