Vex wakes up shivering. Almost without thinking, she curls into Percy, who is still sleeping. The dimming fire casts a hint of light across his skin. He looks so peaceful like this, his eyelashes a dark smudge against a pale backdrop. His long and angular body, all the softness and scars—these things once foreign to her are now becoming familiar.
A sweet fondness blossoms inside her chest.
He had told her there was a place for her at Whitestone.
For a moment, she imagines herself strolling the streets, learning names and faces, and making a home.
Percy shifts a little, and Vex quickly closes her eyes. She stays still, hoping that he has not woken. She is relieved when he doesn't stir again.
Stop being foolish. She reprimands herself.
This was nothing but a fling—a little bit of fun.
She repeats those words to herself again and again. But for some reason, they ring hollow.
It might have something to do with the four hours of sleep that precede them. Or perhaps the lingering memories of dragging a grumpy, petulant 12-year-old Sam out of bed for school when he was still an equally grumpy, petulant kid himself. Or maybe he just isn't wired to handle the early hours.
Whatever it is, Dean Winchester hates mornings.
And yet, he still wakes up early every day.
Drags his ass out of bed with a grumble and a sigh. Keeps his curses as quiet as possible so he doesn't wake Cas beside him. Scrubs at the sleep making his eyes gritty. Shuffles into a pair of pajama bottoms and his slippers with a disgruntled huff, like having to deal with the early morning chill is one of life's greatest inconveniences.
At the doorway, Dean pauses and looks back. Cas is still blissfully unconscious, his breathing slow and heavy and relaxed. The second Dean got out of bed he snagged all the blankets and cocooned himself in them, but by now his hand is out, searching for Dean so he can wrap his arm around him again. When it fails to find him, it curls around Dean's pillow. Cas buries his nose in it and lets out a tiny coo of contentment.
Dean smiles, his heart so full it aches. For just a second, he considers crawling back into bed with Cas. Succumbing to his hatred of mornings and going back to sleep with Cas nuzzled up against him like Dean is his personal teddy bear.
But he doesn't. He shuts the door behind him as quietly as possible and shambles down the hallway.
Dean's not quite firing on all cylinders without coffee in his system, so he bangs his shoulder on the doorway as he rounds the corner into the kitchen, and he swears a blue streak on his way to the sink. He's still grumbling under his breath as he grabs the lid of Sam's shaker bottle from the side of the sink and washes it with as much malcontent as he can muster. Sam always forgets to wash it when he rinses out his bottle, and Dean always has to clean it the next morning so Sam doesn't get yesterday's nasty protein shake crap mixed in with today's. He sets it beside the clean bottle and makes himself some coffee.
It's not long after the smell of fresh coffee fills the kitchen when Sam walks in, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and wearing running clothes like the health freak he is. "Hey."
Dean grunts in acknowledgement. Words are for after coffee. Sam starts making himself a protein shake without so much as a 'thank you' for cleaning his lid. Hell, he's probably not even aware Dean does it for him.
"Oh, can you do extra spinach in my omelette? Gotta use it up; it's getting kinda wilted," Sam asks on his way out the door, like it's a given Dean will make him an omelette. Because it is a given. Five people in the bunker and someone needs to make breakfast for them all. Might as well be Dean. "And tomatoes?"
"Yeah yeah, have it your way, Burger King," Dean grouses as he pours himself a mug of coffee. He dumps what's left and fills the carafe with more water.
"Awesome, thanks." And then Sam's gone off to do horrifying morning activities like jogging.
Dean, however, is doing something even more horrifying. He fills the coffee maker with pumpkin spice flavored coffee and grimaces. But God help him, Cas loves the stuff. And Dean loves Cas, so he'll make him some freakin' pumpkin spice coffee. Though this is the only point in the entire day when he questions his love for Cas. Just a little bit.
As nutmeg and cinnamon fill the air, Dean chugs his respectable cup of plain ol' dark roast and browses the contents of the refrigerator.
Blueberries. He should use those up too. Dean plucks them, some eggs, some butter, some milk, and all of the stuff for Sam’s atrocious vegetable omelette from the fridge.
Jack comes shuffling in while Dean is mixing up blueberry pancake batter, looking sleepy but chipper. He looks even happier when he sees what Dean’s cooking. “Excellent timing! Chop Sam’s tomatoes for me,” Dean commands before Jack even has a chance to say a ‘good morning!’ or grab some juice. The coffee is finally kicking in and dragging him into full wakefulness, but the patient parts of Dean’s brain don’t come online until at least 9am.
Eileen isn’t far behind Jack, but she takes one look at Dean with his spatula and Jack at the cutting board and immediately backs out of the kitchen. “Sorry! Dunno what you’re saying!” she shouts as she retreats, as if she expected Dean to try calling out orders after her. “I’m gonna shower!” Dean sighs and shakes his head. Probably for the best. She handles produce and a chef's knife the same way she does with vampires and a machete.
“Hello, Dean. Jack.” Cas drags himself into the kitchen with half-open eyes. His sleep-rough voice is adorable. The wild shock of hair standing up on one side, even moreso.
“Mornin’ Sunshine!” Dean croons at full volume, like he does every morning, because he’s kind of an asshole and secretly likes the way Cas scowls at Dean’s energy as he makes a cup of his terrible pumpkin spice coffee.
Cas comes up behind Dean and rests his chin over his shoulder to watch him cook, like he’s too tired to even bother holding up his own head. Dean has to be careful how he moves his arm so he doesn’t burn himself on Cas’ hot mug, but he’d be lying if he said this wasn’t one of his favorite parts of the day. Cas tucked up against his back, sleep hazy and warm from their shared bed, those beautiful blues blinking owlishly as Dean makes food for their family.
“Sure you don’t want any?” he asks, pointing down at the griddle even though he knows the answer already.
“No, too early to eat,” Cas grunts by his ear. “Coffee is enough. It smells delicious though.” He tilts his head down to press a gentle kiss to Dean’s shoulder before he pulls away to slouch down in a chair and finish waking up.
By the time Dean finishes breakfast, Sam and Eileen have filtered in too, completing their packed table. For a brief moment it’s utter chaos as everyone grabs plates of food and cutlery and coffee and juice, but before Dean can blink everyone is settled, chowing down on their breakfast or quietly drinking their awful flavored coffee. Dean lets out a weary sigh and sinks down into a chair next to Cas with his own stack of pancakes. It’s way too early to feel this tired.
Almost immediately Cas tilts sideways until he’s using Dean as a headrest again. "I don't see how you can stand getting up so early," Cas says around a slow sip of his coffee. He closes his eyes in appreciation and hums softly.
Dean glances around the table. At Sam, his overly long hair plastered to his sweaty forehead, scrolling through his phone as he shovels egg white omelette into his mouth like he's starving for it. At Eileen, a pleased grin on her face as her closed fist moves in a circle in front of her, her thumb pointed down over her stack of pancakes. At Jack, watching her intently as she teaches him a new sign, his fork suspended halfway to his mouth until a bite of pancake falls off it and smacks onto the table, making Eileen laugh.
At his family, fed and caffeinated and content, ready to start their days because Dean took the extra time to get things off on the right foot.
"I dunno," Dean says with a shrug as he passes Jack the bottle of syrup. He grins. "I kinda like mornings."
A/N: Jensen and his sixteen year old daughter get into an argument before she goes out for a night with some friends. A few hours later, Jensen gets a call that is going to change his family’s life forever.
“This food blows.” You stated as you scooped up some of the soup in front of you before letting the liquid slide off of the spoon.
“That’s not very nice.” JJ said from her spot next to you on a chair as she continued to flip through her book, looking at the pictures.
“Yeah well, you’re allowed to eat real food. I’ve been eating this hospital crap for over a week and it sucks.” You replied, glaring over at your little sister before throwing the spoon down onto the tray in front of you. “I just wanna go home.”
“‘M sorry sissy.” JJ told you, putting her book down before walking to the bed, “Mama packed PB&J’s for me, I can go grab you one if ya want.”
You couldn’t help but crack a small smile with her words; the first time you’d smiled since waking up. You woke up eight days ago and had been miserable ever since. There was constant pain, the food was terrible, your family never gave you a minute alone. Your entire world had changed while you were sleeping and you weren’t doing a good job coping with it. The doctors weren’t sure you’d ever walk again and all they’d do is talk about the different surgeries you had ahead of you and the months of rehab.
The latest surgery you had was yesterday, they operated on your shoulder and your hip which meant your pain level was high. You were miserable and irritable but your family insisted on someone being there with you every minute. Currently your mom and dad were in a meeting with the doctors where they were making a long term care plan for you; which was great but would be better if they included you.
“Thanks for the offer kiddo but I bet Doc Johnson would flip out if he found out I ate real food.” You explained to the four year old.
“Hmm, here, lemme help feed you. Shoulder must hurt.” JJ said before trying to climb onto the bed with you.
“No JJ, I’m fine, I can feed myself.” You told her, trying to prevent her from getting on the bed with you but your movement was restricted due to all the IVs you were hooked up to.
“No, I wanna help. It’s what sissy’s do.” She exclaimed as she managed to tumble onto the bed, rolling into your hip that had been operated on yesterday.
You let out a shout of pain as she tried to move away from you which only resulted in her causing you more pain, “JJ STOP!” You cried out as tears rolled down your face from the pain.
“What’s going on in here?” Danneel questioned as she walked into the room, her eyes going wide at the scene in front of her, “JJ what are you doing?” Your mother rushed over to the bed to pick her up so that she wasn’t hurting you anymore.
“Y/N where does it hurt?” Your RN Julie asked as she moved the blankets off of you so she could check the bandaging on your hip.
“Everywhere.” You cried out, “Why doesn’t anyone understand? Everything hurts.” You explained.
“I’m sorry sweetie, I’ll give you something for the pain once I check your sutures to make everything is intact.” Julie spoke softly.
“JJ I told you, you have to be very careful by Y/N. She’s really hurt and she has to be still in order to get better.” Danneel said to her young daughter.
JJ hid her face in Danneel’s neck, “I just wanted to help her get better.”
“Your stitches tore,” Julie told you with a sad face, “I’m gonna have to get a doctor back up here to fix it and then I’ll clean you up. I’m gonna get you some pain meds first though, kay Y/N?”
“No,” You spoke as tears rolled down your cheeks, “It’s not okay! Everything hurts, they left a kid in here with me and she fucked up my already fucked up body. I just wanna be better and for everyone to leave me alone but I’m never gonna be okay again apparently an-and-and-” You wanted to continue on but couldn’t. Your breathing was getting heavier and you found it difficult to breathe, “Wha-wh-hap.”
“It’s okay Y/N, can you try to take a deep breath for me?” Julie asked.
“What’s going on?” Danneel demanded, she now stood next to you while still holding JJ in her arms. You quickly reached out to grab onto her hand and she was fast to grip it back.
“Y/N take a deep breath.” Julie requested again before looking at your mother, “She’s having a panic attack.”
“Ca-can’t.” You tried to speak but couldn’t.
“It’s okay Y/N, I’m gonna help you okay?” Julie stayed calm before hitting a button the device she was wearing, “Call Monica Smart.”
“Calling Monica Smart.” The machine spoke back, a moment later another voice was on the line, “Hey Julie, what’s up?”
“Can you bring me some Prozac to 55?” Julie asked her coworker.
“Course, grabbing it now. Need me to get anyone?” The other nurse asked.
“Could you call Johnson and let him know 55’s having a panic attack, he’s gonna wanna check on her.” Julie stated.
“Got it, be up in a sec.” Monica replied.
“Okay Y/N my friend’s gonna bring up some medicine that’s gonna help calm you down. I’m gonna put the oxygen mask on over you to help some but remember everything’s okay. It’ll all be over in a second.” Julie let you know.
“You’re gonna be fine baby, just keep trying to take some breaths.” Danneel tried to help.
“Got it,” Monica said as she walked into the room and handed it to Julie.
“Okay Y/N, this medicine is gonna make you feel better. You might fall asleep but when you wake up you’ll feel better and I’ll have the stitches all cleaned up.” Julie explained to you.
You nodded your head as you struggled to breath, soon you felt your heart rate slow down as well as your breathing. Before you knew it your eyes were beginning to shut.
When you woke up it was dark outside, letting you know you’d been asleep for hours. Your head felt groggy from the medications but you could still make out your father’s figure sitting on the chair next to your bed.
“Dad?” You said, your voice somewhat scratchy.
Grabbing his attention he looked up at you, “Look who’s up,” He stated, putting his phone down before shuffling his chair to be closer to you, “How ya feeling?”
“Like crap.” You mumbled before slamming your head back onto the pillow.
“I’m sorry kiddo, I don’t know what we were thinking my letting JJ stay with you alone. We thought she’d be more careful but we still shouldn’t have done it. She just misses her big sister time.” Jensen told you.
“It’s whatever.” You replied quietly as you closed your eyes, not wanting to continue the conversation.
Jensen looked at you with worried eyes, “You slept through dinner, want me to go grab ya something?”
“No.” You stated flatly before turning your head so you weren’t facing him, “Just wanna go back to sleep.”
“You hurting babygirl? We can try to get you some more pain meds if you need them.” Your dad asked, standing up so that he was looking down at you.
You nodded your head, “Please. I just want it all to stop. I don’t wanna hurt anymore.”
Jensen placed his hand on your head, wanting to run his fingers through your hair, something he used to always do to comfort you, only he couldn’t due to your hair being a mess from not being able to shower for so long.
“I’m so sorry sweetheart, I wish there was more I could do.” He told you.
You felt tears begin to well in your eyes as you realized how helpless you are, “I wanna go home. Please.”
Jensen felt the guilt begin to rise, he had no control over what happened to you and not being able to help his child was killing him on the inside, “I’m sorry babygirl, but we can’t go until the doctors say it’s okay. You have a lot of physical therapy ahead of you and we wanna make sure you’re as healthy as possible before it starts.” He tried to explain but it fell on deaf ears.
“What’s the point of you having all this money if you can’t use it to help me get better?” You questioned him, tears rolling down your cheeks with anger in your eyes.
“Y/N-” Your father tried but you wouldn’t let him speak.
“I’ve been hooked up to machines for weeks, I can’t walk, I haven’t showered, I-I have a freaking tube shoved in me since I can’t pee. Everything hurts, I’m not comfortable, I-I-I just wanna go home. I just want things to go back to normal. I want my bed. I want my dog. I want my life!” You shouted before the tears began to pour, “I-it-it’s not f-fai-r.”
Jensen was quick to lower the rail on the bed before carefully getting in next to you, avoiding wires and your sore sports he gently pulled you into him, wrapping you in his arms. You grabbed onto him like you were two years old again and afraid of a storm.
The pair of you stayed like that for a while, your dad just holding onto you, trying to keep you together while you were falling apart before his eyes. As you began to calm down Jensen started to speak to you, “I’m so sorry sweetheart, if I could trade places with you I would in a heartbeat. I’d take away all your pain, get you back on the basketball court, chasing your siblings around; but I can’t. All I can do is hold you and tell you I’m going to do whatever I can to help you get better.”
Tears began to fall again with his words before you started to hyperventilate, “I-I ma-y no-ot even wa-walk a-a-again.”
Your dad just squeezed you tighter as you spoke, hoping it’d be able to fight away the panic attack, “I’m going to do whatever I have to, to make sure you walk again. Okay sweetheart? You have my word. You nodded your head against his chest as your breathing mellowed and eyes grew heavy, “You can fall asleep honey, I’ll be here when you wake up, promise.”
Nodding your head again you allowed your eyes to fall shut and let sleep overtake you, but not before mumbling to your father once more.
“‘M broken Daddy, don’t know if it’s worth fixing.”
If someone has a hitman after them, but hires a bodyguard, their life depends on who's better at their job.
Or: Jeremy sincerely hopes he's a better hitman than The Vagabond is bodyguard.
Chapter: 1/?
Jeremy has decided he no longer wants to make deals in bars. He’s almost never sure who exactly his client is going to be, he’s far too tempted to get absolutely plastered after the deal is done (when in Rome, you know?) and he always feels awkward looking at photos of someone who’s going to end up dead. At least in public he does. It’s never come back to bite him in the ass, but still. He worries.
Tonight he’s lucky, to some degree, because clearly the sketchy guy in the trenchcoat, glancing around like he’s worried he’s going to get taken out, is the client. Jeremy guesses he wants some politician dead, or maybe somebody from an opposing company. He reads corporate for sure. Those hits tend to leave a bad taste in his mouth. Can’t they just have a corporate dick measuring contest and call it a day? Why do they need to bring murder into it?
The delegation were smelled before they were seen. An acrid, sharp, bitter stench suddenly cracked through the museum like lightning, the olfactory equivalent of diving into ice-cold water sinus-first. Some fainted - some fell to their knees - most cried out, retching, eyes watering.
Such was the chaos that it took a moment for the delegation to be spotted where they now stood - they had not entered, they had not done anything so gauche as appear; they were simply there one moment, just as clearly as they had not been the moment before.
Shrouded in black, trailing glimmers of something somehow even darker, like they had pushed through a veil of reality as one might push through a hedge, but instead of leaves and thorns caught on their coats, it was something - else.
The message they had brought, like their scent, was instantly in the minds of everyone within a twenty-mile proximity. It was clear. It was concise. And it was not a request.
Within the hour, the museum’s trustees and heads of department were assembled, in a room as far away from the smell and the horrible clanging psychic blaring as they could find. A gallery assistant - one of the few who had been at ground zero of the Incident who was able to give an eyewitness (nosewitness, telepathywitness) account - was still wrapped in a foil blanket from the bewildered internal first aiders, and was rapidly explaining what had happened to the coffee clutched in her hands rather than meet the eyes of any of the people sat round the table.
As she finished, her supervisor - Front of House Team Leader Jeremy Swires, clapped a hand on her shoulder and brusquely told her to go get some rest. He then turned to the trustees.
“This matches everything else heard. Our - visitors - have come to, uh, reclaim something of theirs which we have taken.”
“Which they accuse us of having taken,” cut in Deborah, from Legal.
“Excellent point, Deborah,” agreed Simon, from PR.
“What’s the public view on this, Simon?” asked Terry, from Public Engagement.
“Well, amongst everything else - the black vortex over Piccadilly, the tentacles coming out of the Thames - and with the museum being sealed off in the wall of thorns - it’s not clear how many of the outside world actually know this is the centre of it all.”
“Allegedly,” cut in Deborah from Legal.
“Allegedly, yes, thank you Deborah. So we’re not as high in Twitter mentions as we’d like.”
“Arts getting shafted again,” muttered Bruce from Marketing.
“What artefact is it they’re even after?” asked Terry from Public Engagement, “Did they say?”
“We’ve been looking, of course,” said Lottie, from Collections, “Going by the description, it could match several objects in our archives. The walls have been bleeding a bit down there, we just thought it was the damp. I’d be inclined to show all the possibilities to the delegation and let them tell us which-”
A rumble from the head of the table, of a volcano stirring from dormancy. Everyone looked round as Marcus, the Head of the Museum, shifted upright in his chair. “Let’s not get too carried away,” he warned, with a voice as deep and gravelly as an abandoned coal mine. “Do they have any proof of ownership?”
Lottie from Collections’s eyes narrowed, and she flicked a glance at Deborah from Legal, who didn’t meet her gaze, but also seemed to be very determinedly maintaining a neutral expression. After a horrible moment, she realised, to make matters even worse, he seemed to be waiting for an answer, and was increasingly unimpressed he wasn’t getting one.
“No,” she said, in confusion, “No, they, uh - haven’t given us, what, a deed of ownership?”
“Or,” added Deborah from Legal smoothly, “any other documents that meet the museum’s standard criteria for claims of prior ownership.”
There was another, horrid silence. “Sir,” said Jeremy from Front of House, slowly, “Are you suggesting we go down there and say ‘sorry but no’??”
“Nothing to be sorry about,” said Marcus, “We’re a historic institution.”
“We do,” agreed Deborah from Legal, “have to think about the precedent it would set.”
Lottie from Collections snorted in disbelief. “I don’t think Amal Clooney’s going to get it into her head that wrapping the museum in thorns is the way to get the Parthenon Marbles back.”
“Don’t put it past her,” muttered Terry from Public Engagement.
“We can discuss a loan if they agree to surrender claim of ownership,” said Marcus, “as is standard practise.”
“Sir, there are tentacles in the Thames.”
Marcus just sighed. “Well, that’s 2020 for you, isn’t it?”

~*~
This is an old thread that somehow never made it onto AO3. For those of you who were following stories on my Threads page on Tumblr, you know this story as ‘Letters (AU)’. I’ve dropped the AU from the title since this has become our official head canon for this particular verse. The ‘original’ Letters will be edited and posted under a different title later on with a disclaimer, so people don’t think it’s an entirely new story.
