It's not common knowledge, mostly because Katjya REFUSES to bring it up, but he had a twin sister. Sometimes she was called Medina, sometimes they just made up sounds and ended up with Lynrie. Anyhow, the two became sick with a bad case of strep throat when they were around 4 sweeps old, and being alone in the desert, they couldn't find help they needed to prevent it from getting so bad. This is what caused hearing loss in Katjya, and took his sister's life. It was Shay who found the twins, and there isn't a single sweep that goes by wishing he had learned of the two sooner (':
recently there was a certain.. incident. Katjya had opened the door to Caurin's study while he was in the middle of practicing his magic rituals. He wasn't expecting her, and something went horribly wrong that led to Kat's death. He WAS able to use that same magic to bring her back, but she hasn't been the same since. They're much like how they used to be sweeps ago before they fucked off to work on themselves- becoming volatile, easily pushed to anger and acting out, reckless behavior, etc. To old friends, it looks like Kat's regressing and all their hard work to BE a decent person is being thrown away (':
