Katsuki is not freaking out. He’s very calm and collected and definitely not running around the apartment like a madman. He’s fine. It’s fine. Everything’s fine!
Except it can’t just be fine, it has to be fucking perfect because today is the nerd’s 23rd birthday and Katsuki is determined to make sure that nothing else goes wrong. He was already pissed because he planned to take Izuku hiking earlier in the morning only for the asshole to be called into work to deal with some lame-ass villain. Katsuki had hoped it wouldn’t take too long, but unfortunately, his boyfriend was the kindest motherfucker on the planet and had offered to cover the patrol route for one of the heroes who had gotten injured in the fight.
Tch. Fucking dickhead.
So now, Katsuki’s working on salvaging their evening by stringing up fairy lights and All-Might-themed decorations around the apartment. Yeah, the nerd’s a grown-ass man, but his obsession with all things All Might never died down.
Once Katsuki finishes covering their living room in balloons, streamers, and a “Happy Birthday” banner, he heads back to the kitchen to put the finishing touches on Izuku’s cake. He quickly gets to work piping yellow swirls of frosting around the top of the cake, smiling softly as he recalls when Izuku told him that carrot cake was his favorite. It was back during their time at UA when Sato was stress-baking again. He’d made dozens of different cakes and everyone was taste-testing them, discussing their favorites. Katsuki and Izuku, to the amusement of their classmates, spent their time bickering over carrot cake. The greenette made the claim that it was healthy because it had vegetables in it, meanwhile, Katsuki was trying to explain that the minuscule amounts of carrots in the batter couldn’t make up for the shit ton of sugar and empty calories. As ridiculous as it was, the blond couldn’t even be upset as he thought about the passion in the other boy’s face over something as silly as cakes.
Katsuki had just finished placing the candles and began lighting them with his quirk when he hears the sound of keys jangling at the front door. He panics, hands becoming clammy with sweat as he works frantically, the typical perfect control he has over his quirk slipping in his haste.
“Don’t blow up the fucking cake Katsuki, you’re a goddamn hero for Christ’s sake,” he mutters to himself as he lights the final candle and sprints to the light switch on the opposite side of the room. Fortunately for him, he turns off the lights right as the front door opens. But unfortunately, he misjudges just how much speed he’s gained as his socked feet slid across the tiled floor before tumbling comically to the ground. He swore loudly, rubbing his sore knee before pushing himself up off the ground and running back over to the cake sitting on the dining room table.
He paused for a moment, straining to hear the sounds of Izuku taking his shoes off and hanging up his raincoat. He used the extra time to attempt to ready himself, brushing his clothes off and running a hand through his hair in an attempt to tame the explosive blond spikes. Once he’d finished preening, he leaned an arm nonchalantly against the table, cocking his hip and waiting for his boyfriend to arrive and find his surprise. After a moment, he heard Izuku’s concerned voice ring out from the genkan.
“Kacchan? Is everything okay?” he questioned, moving further into the apartment. “Why are all the lights turned off? Kacchan, where are y- oh”
Izuku rounded the corner, letting out a surprised gasp, his eyes widening in awe as he took in the decorations adorning the candlelit room. He scanned the room, pausing once his gaze landed on his smug boyfriend standing next to the homemade cake. A radiant smile broke out across his face as he let out a joyous laugh, exclaiming, “Kacchan!”
He ran towards the blond, jumping into strong arms and wrapping muscled legs around a narrow waist. Izuku’s scarred hands cupped Katsuki’s face as he pulled him in for a passionate kiss. Katsuki eagerly reciprocated, large hands moving to rest comfortably beneath thick thighs, one hand teasingly snaking its way upward to grab a handful of the greenette’s ass.
Izuku sighed into the kiss, causing Katsuki to reluctantly pull away before this birthday surprise turned into something else altogether. Izuku let a breathless whine slip through pouty, kiss-swollen lips at their separation, his shining emerald green eyes meeting burning crimson in a prolonged, loving gaze. Katsuki chuckled, leaning in to press a kiss against Izuku’s nose before setting him down gently. He turns him around to face the cake, pulling Izuku's back against his chest as he leans down to whisper against his lover's ear.
“Happy birthday, baby. Make a wish.”
Izuku relaxed into Katsuki’s hold, smiling brightly as he took a moment to reflect on how blessed he is. Standing here with the love of his life, who spent so much time and effort trying to give him the perfect birthday surprise. He turned his head to look at Katsuki, his voice full of emotion as he spoke.
“Kacchan,” he said softly, “Why would I make a wish when everything I could ever want is right here?”
He lifted himself onto his toes, brushing a gentle kiss across the blond’s jaw before turning to the cake and blowing out the candles, making a wish to feel this happy forever.
Katsuki watched Izuku blow out his candles, marveling at the way the warm light kissed his freckled skin and made his sparkling eyes glow even more than usual. He felt his heart swell with affection and a smile spread across his face as he became overwhelmed with love for the man in front of him. His childhood friend, his rival, his soulmate who had seen him through both the best and worst moments of his life. Katsuki was usually pretty fucking sure of himself, but now there wasn’t even a shadow of a doubt in his mind for what he was about to do. Falling in love with Izuku Midoriya is the easiest goddamn thing he’s ever done, and loving him was even easier.
With a deep breath, Katsuki stepped back, taking Izuku’s hand as he dropped to one knee and pulled the small, velvet box from his pocket.
“Izuku…”
