Vilnius Hack and Tell #30 -- the projects
Eight projects were presented again:
Alexey presented a small bird tracking system he’s developing with a university. Mykita showed off their cave surveying calibration tool. Marukas showed an e-learning system he’s working on that seeks to integrate micro:bit microcomputers and Moodle -- he aims to make it easier to let teachers collaborate with kids who have received the micro:bits!
Liudas brought a DIY bioreactor he plans to use while growing and researching plastic-eating bacteria. He also talked about plastic-eating organisms and specifics of plastic bio-degradation. This biohacking project won the public prize!
Ričardas from Linkmenų fabrikas makerspace at VGTU brought a Retro-Pi based arcade console and minibar he has made from various found materials -- including a vintage LCD screen and Peltier elements for cooling the drinks.
Justinas and Jurgis have created a unique trilingual infotext display system for an exhibition “Pasaulis semiotiko akimis” at Martynas Mažvydas National library. They used laser-cut polarised film to switch between translations.
Egidijus from Kaunas makerspace brought his DIY flocculation machine that uses high voltage to coat surfaces with fine fur. Here’s the Hack and Tell prize they have upgraded after Vaidas won the previous Hack and Tell with a DIY SLA printer:
Last but not least, Rokas brough his extremely low-frequency-centered portable loudspeaker. Don’t miss the next Hack and Tell on November 3rd!

The thirtieth Hack and Tell -- we can't believe it's the fourth year we're organising it!
The last HnT was a blast: we had 8 presentations ranging from a VR paraglider to an LED art installation to microcontrollers for kids to woodwork to moisture sensor development. Congratulations to Vaidas from Kauno Makerspace -- he won the prize for his DIY SLA 3D printer!
Hack and Tell is only as good as we make it -- bring your hacks, projects, failures. Anything goes: a script, a chair, a metalwork project, a cake. Bring your projects, your beers and friends.
Tomorow Hack and Tell is going to Kaunas -- Kaunas Makerspace are having their housewarming party with Kaunas Hack and Tell #1!

Indaplovių botnet'as? Kamera iš mikrobangų krosnelės? Vibratorius, siunčiantis gamintojui duomenis apie tai, ką su juo veiki? Vyno butelis, parodantis, kiek nugėrei? Nuhakinti žaisliniai meškučiai, reikalaujantys išpirkos? Malwaru užkrėsti širdies ritmo reguliatoriai? Sulčiaspaudė, kuria negali naudotis, jeigu neveikia WiFi? Jau nebeaišku, kas yra tikras produktas, o kas -- parodija. Akivaizdu tik tai, kad vietoje realių globalių problemų sprendimo technologijų firmos renkasi kurti absurdiškus, nereikalingus, nesaugius, neveikiančius gadget'us, kurių vieninteliai monetizavimo modeliai yra vartotojų sekimas ir įkyri reklama.
Internet of Shit hakatono metu nesteigsime startupų, nekeisime pasaulio, nesivaikysime investuotojų ir neveisime vienaragių. Tiesiog kartu pasidžiaugsime atsukdami absurdo rankenėles iki vienuolikos.

A dishwasher botnet? A spying camera in a microwave oven? A dildo, surreptitiously sending the usage patterns to its manufacturer? A smart wine bottle that displays how much wine is left? Hacked teddy beards demanding ransom from parents? Malware in a heart pacemaker? A juicer that cannot be used when Wi-Fi is down?
It’s no longer clear what is an actual product and what is cruel parody. The only thing evident is that tech companies are choosing to create absurd useless unsafe malfunctioning gadgets instead of looking for solutions for the very real global problems we face. The gadgets, of course, can only be monetised via surveillance of their users and ubiquitous ads.
We shall not start startups, change the world, chase investors or breed unicorns during the Internet of Shit hackathon. Let’s simply turn up the absurd till 11, learn something and have fun.
