Waiting Patiently: The forgotten horse in the King George for Ruth Jefferson?
Waiting Patiently: The forgotten horse in the King George for Ruth Jefferson?
The King George VI Chase takes place on Boxing Day and is regarded as the second most prestigious chase in England, behind only by the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The inaugural event took place in 1937 but wasn’t held on Boxing Day until 1947.
Kauto Star is the most successful horse in the history of the King George, winning five times over a six-year period between 2006-11.

I am SO sorry to hear the sad news about Kauto Star. I do not even know what to say.
He was put to sleep Monday, 29 June, after a paddock accident on Wednesday, 24 June. He was hospitalised and given intensive medical treatment at the Valley Equine Hospital in Upper Lambourn.
Owner Clive Smith said: “I am devastated. He had been turned out in Laura's [Collett - rider] paddock, as has been done normally with him at this time for years, and he looks to have jumped something, and stumbled, we're not really sure, but he injured himself - and it became obvious it was serious ...” Read more here.
Rest In Peace, buddy. 19 March 2000 - 29 June 2015

A true legend has left us.
Kauto Star, was put to sleep after suffering serious injuries at his paddock.
The news came out today, and when I read them, I was in tears, I was heartbroken.
He was once in a lifetime horse, not only for Paul Nicholls and his team, but also for Ruby and all th racing community.
We’ll never see another one like him, I’m 100% sure.
He’ll also be remembered for his battles with his stablemate Denman.
Kauto was the horse that made me fell in love with NH, and he will always be my fav for that. I can’t believe he’s gone. He was young still. I’m completely devasted, but he’s now in a better place, I guess.
Take care of the ones that are gone, and keep an eye on the ones that are still racing down here.
Goodbye King,
Goodbye Kauto Star.
Another Legend in the Sky
I'm not one for really writing blog posts, normally I just let all my emotions pile up unheard until I explode but today was different. Today was most possibly one of the worst days in Racing, as today the legend that was the one and only Kauto Star, a personal favourite of mine and countless others, left us to carrying on running up in Heaven with the likes of Desert Orchid and Arkle. I was just on Twitter having got in from a quick run down to the shops on that hot morning when I noticed familiar name on the treading list. Kauto Star, Two time Gold cup winner put to sleep. And right there and then my heart completely shattered into a million pieces, I felt sick,Mortified and burst into tears right in front of my mum. When she asked me what was wrong I couldn't even make out a sentence to tell her that the greatest jump horse of my era had passed away. I'm a flat girl, I've always been more interested in Flat racing than Jump racing but It was Kauto Star who really drew me into Jump Racing. Arkle is just a name that floats around my house sometimes, not even my parents remember him racing, and the only time I ever saw Desert Orchid was at a Newmarket Countryside day and he was the main attraction. But Kauto Star was the horse of my era. I really don’t actually remember the first time I ever heard the name, It might have been in the 2007 Gold Cup when I was nine. Having being down with a sickness for two days I was off school and Cheltenham was on. But the one race I remember clearly is one of my favourites. The 2009 Gold Cup. I’d begged my mum to let me take the afternoon of school so I wouldn't miss the race on the TV and it was worth it....So worth it, to see him thunder down the hill, to hear the roaring of the crowed as they cheered this Star home is unforgettable. Neither is his last Betfair chase or Fifth King George. These are memories I want my own Children to grow up on, stories of the mighty and much loved horse with the white face. You know most girls cry about their favourite band breaking up or when they get dumped, but here was me and seventeen year old girl sobbing over a Racehorse and I don’t think I’ve cried this badly over once since either Redwildling or Little Josh. The racehorse who had brought so much happiness into not only my life but to everyone else in the racing industry. I was never lucky enough to see the great horse in person but you could tell everywhere that Star went the crowed followed to adore him, chant his name and reminisce over his great achievements. Having worked in the Racing world as a stable hand I know how hard the loss of a horse can be and I’d like to offer my sincerest condolences to every one, past and present, who had the pleasure of being a part of this Champions life. From the breeders to his life in France, to the team at Ditchet, From Clive Smith to Clifford Baker, to his stable hands, to Paul Nicholas ,to Ruby Walsh and to Laura Collett.
And now is the time I've been dreading whilst writing this...the time to say Goodbye. When people say to me ‘oh you wasn't even involved with the horse why are you so upset?’ They don’t seem to realise that Kauto Star with a few other Horses is what powered me to peruse my career in racing and that this one little horse touched the hearts of not one or two people but thousands. I have felt so privileged to have been old enough to see all his Victories and his legacy was all live on with me until the day I die. So farewell Kauto, Its heart breaking that you was taken from us but I have no doubt that you are Galloping around the heaven version of Kempton racing all the Legends. So run free boy and Thank you. Thank you for everything Kauto Star- The King of Jump Racing.

Two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star put down after paddock fall
Two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star has been put down after injuring his pelvis and neck in a fall in a paddock. The 15-year-old had a glittering career with champion trainer Paul Nicholls, winning the King George VI Chase at Kempton five times. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2007 and again in 2009, becoming the first horse to regain the cup after losing it in 2008 when he ended up seven lengths behind stablemate Denman. He retired from racing in 2012.
It's just horrendous. He was out in the field, the same field he was out in every day. We don't really know what happened, but he injured his neck and pelvis and sadly had to be put to sleep.
Rider Laura Collett
Kauto Star went on to have a career in dressage with Laura Collett, and last December took part in a demonstration on the opening night of the London International Horse Show at Olympia. Owner Clive Smith said Kauto Star had suffered what appeared to have been a minor injury last week, but his condition deteriorated over the weekend.
He just loved the attention, he was a little bit of a show-off. He liked being stroked and given lots of Polos. He was a particularly extrovert type of horse and he was so talented as well, which makes it all the more difficult to take in.
Owner Clive Smith
RIP Kauto Star 2000-2015 The legendary racehorse was put down today after sustaining a fracture to his pelvis in the field at Laura Collett’s yard. Rest in peace Kauto, you were one of the greats.
