Which Irish former jockey won the English Grand National in 2000 on Papillon, and in 2005 on Hedgehunter?
Rupert "Ruby" Walsh (born 1979) is an Irish former jockey and, as of 2022, the third most prolific winner in British and Irish jump racing history. He won the English Grand National in 2000 on his first attempt, aged 20, on a horse called Papillon. He won again in 2005 on Hedgehunter.
Aside from two English Grand National wins, Walsh has been Irish jump jockey champion twelve times and won the Welsh and Irish Grand Nationals. He has ridden over 2500 winning horses, including 59 winners at the Cheltenham Festival.
The English Grand National is a horse race held every year at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. The race course is about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs (4 miles 514 yards (6.907 km)), with 30 fences to jump.
On 1st May 2019, Walsh announced his retirement from racing with immediate effect after a career spanning 24 years. Like many jockeys, he had suffered several injuries, including broken bones, which took their toll on his body.
