Part Five of the fake Kaws Master Class. This is a sneaky one…the suspenders. The fake Pinocchio (second image actually) the paint on the suspenders is glossy. The first photo, the authentic piece, is matte. It is safe to say that a majority of the painted Kaws pieces, the paint is a matte finish, almost egg-shell. Part 3 of my Master Class on how to spot a fake Kaws piece…purchased from StockX… this one is a big one. The feet, there are however other in-your-face-issue also, like color. The fake one is on the right. I’ve seen this on other bootleg Kaws pieces before, especially a Darth Vader, Stormtrooper or Boba Fett. The fake one on the right looks like the edges of the feet were whittled with an Xacto knife. Part 2 of my Master Class on spotting Kaws fakes purchased from StockX. Now we are delving a little more closely to the inside. This is the plastic interior protective packing. This one was a glaring one for me. The first image is of the bootleg sold off as authentic by StockX. First thing I noticed is the way the Jiminy Cricket was housed. The figure was only slightly indented into the plastic. Just the feet and the top of the hat were molded into the plastic protection. In the second image, you can see the way the piece is supposed to be. More sunken in, more protected if you would. Also, another glaring mistake, the plastic is a clean milky white…where as the 12 year-old authentic packaging shows it’s age, it’s yellowed slightly. Small factors, but noticeable if you know what you’re looking for. I’m starting a “Master Class” series on Kaws pieces and how to spot fakes that you may come across. Part 1. This is an amazing one! This fake was a purchased from StockX, a purchase price of around $7k. This is the first of a couple of posts I’m going to do. First let’s look at the boxes…the one on the right is the fake from StockX, the left is a real one. Notice first the difference in size, and second, notice the difference in color. You can’t really tell from the photo, but there is a certain “sharpness” that is lacking in the bootleg. This is particularly noticeable on the back. There is a lot wrong with the box, but if you don’t know, you won’t know better. Another dead giveaway on the box was the tape used to seal the boxes. Now the 12 year-old authentic one, the tape looks 12 years old.
