Sigh. I really, really wanted to like Silent Tears by Kay Bratt. For so many reasons, I wanted to love it [for my desire to visit China, for my friends who have adopted internationally, for our shared faith & values, for my own developing nation experiences…] but for so many more reasons, I did not. Here's just a few: The lack of narrative, the story was told completely from her journal entries over the 4 years [some of which just listed what she did that day!]. The book started with a narrative, and I was hoping that would continue, or at least flip back and forth, but alas, it did not. I also found myself getting annoyed or even angry at the author's [unintentional?] imperialistic world view. I get it, America is great…especially if it's all you know…but any comparison she made to China, made it sound so very offensive. And her constant references to "expatriates". We get it. You had lots of friends from nations other than China.
What I DID like about this book was that it brought awareness to a very real and serious problem, the lack of care of orphans in China. I respect the author's selfless & tireless work at this particular orphanage, which truly sounded horrendous at times. If this book inspires more people to adopt Chinese orphans, then to me, it's a success.
